Default Wrapping Headers?

Someone told me if you wrap your headers with some kind of material (i forgot what kind) it helps keep the heat in and gives you more horsepower. (up to 5hp he said)

......is this true?...anyone heard of it.....

I've heard things like that but I'm not sure what to think of it. Don't know that anyone has ever done that single mod and hit the dyno.

OTHH, it does look good when done right, and will help with some of the swamp crotch that some bikes give you... the F4/F4i comes to mind.

header wrap, its a special fiberglass cloth that you wrap around your headers. It does give some horsepower in cars, some theory about the exhaust gasses staying hotter in the headers, therefore being under more pressure to evacuate quicker, thus allowing for a more free flowing exhaust. its minimal.

Its use is debated on street bikes, as it tends to get the engine area too hot for minimal gains.(drag bikes do it, but they only run for a few minutes).
plus, it is known to weaken certain metals, like Ti, will get weaker if it has too many high heat exposures.'

all that to be said, I have about 5 inches of exhaust wrap on one of my outside headers just to protect my track plastics that are laying on the header. works just fine.

I wouldn't do it. If you want to go that route, go with a ceramic coating process instead. Only reason is there are a lot of exposed exhaust parts on a bike, unlike wrapping headers on a car which are pretty much tucked in beside the engine and fairly safe from the elements. But with that being said, even ona car, they tend to rust out the header quicker if they get wet. On a bike I would assume it would be a lot quicker than that because of exposeure. It is proven on cars that ceramic coated (and/or wrapped) headers help with HP. I imagine it would be the same on a bike.
