Default Want to paint stator cover - oil or no oil?

Hey all, I'm looking to pull the stator cover off and spraypaint it semi-gloss black. When I take the bolts out I'm not going to need a pan underneath to catch fluid am I?

Thanks - P

Yes you will. I actually just painted mine while on the bike. I took the fairing off taped everything around it off, cleaned it, primer, and paint. Came out awesome and all i used was black engine paint.

what's the difference between engine paint and regular rattlecan? That part doesn't get very hot does it?

Yes it does get some heat on it so I would go with the engine paint, it's made for hot engines. There will be some oil come out if you remove the cover, just do like TRIAX and remove fairing, tape it off and spray it.

Draining the oil is no big deal. Even replacing the gasket on the stator cover shouldn't be an issue. Whenever I make changes or modifications to my bike, I like to make it difficult to tell that it's not original. If you remove the cover, you get the opportunity to do some inspection, clean the cover bolt heads, clean the area around the bolt head recesses. All these little things can make the difference in how the final job comes out. I'm not saying that Triax's job doesn't look good, just that I take a different approach to it. I would take the advice on using high temp paint. You can pick it up in any auto parts store. Since you're painting it black, they're sure to have that color. Good luck and I hope it comes out looking like you want.

Engine paint is just more heat resistant so the paint won't crack or peel off after a few heat cycles.

Went with the "paint it on the bike" method. Turned out well. I cut a circle out of a piece of cardboard for a paint sheild. Came out nice. I shot some primer on, then hit it with black semi-gloss.Looks really nice. Hopefully the heat it sees will help cure the paint, rather than destroy it. I can see high-heat paint for exhaust, but the stator cover? Really?

Why not? It's attached to a motor running near 180 degrees at all times.

Hell, it gets almost 180 degrees outside sometimes in the summer in Arizona...180 does not seem very hot when it comes to paint. At least not to me... I dunno

It will probably be fine, i just like to over analize things like that because I hate doing things twice you know.
