RE: Want to paint stator cover - oil or no oil?
Draining the oil is no big deal. Even replacing the gasket on the stator cover shouldn't be an issue. Whenever I make changes or modifications to my bike, I like to make it difficult to tell that it's not original. If you remove the cover, you get the opportunity to do some inspection, clean the cover bolt heads, clean the area around the bolt head recesses. All these little things can make the difference in how the final job comes out. I'm not saying that Triax's job doesn't look good, just that I take a different approach to it. I would take the advice on using high temp paint. You can pick it up in any auto parts store. Since you're painting it black, they're sure to have that color. Good luck and I hope it comes out looking like you want.

Went with the "paint it on the bike" method. Turned out well. I cut a circle out of a piece of cardboard for a paint sheild. Came out nice. I shot some primer on, then hit it with black semi-gloss.Looks really nice. Hopefully the heat it sees will help cure the paint, rather than destroy it. I can see high-heat paint for exhaust, but the stator cover? Really?
