Default Thermostat Question

Hello all,

I'm trying to narrow down my over heating problem. So far I have replaced all my O-rings in my water pump and oil cooler and replaced my thermo switch on my radiator. Lastly I am looking at my thermostat as a potential problem. I tested it via the manual and when it finally open it opened about 1mm.

Has anyone tested their thermostat and if so were this the same results you got? If not does a 1mm opening sound reasonable for the thermostat or should it open more?

Thanks in advance for the responses,
Cameron

Sounds like your Thermostat valve is bad because it should open 8mm minimum at 203 F. To test it, all you have to do is heat some water in a pan, suspend the thermostat and make sure it doesn't touch your pan. Have a thermometer to measure the temp without touching the pan and watch for when the valve starts to open (176 - 183 F). If it doesn't replace the thermostat.

Yeah I tested it but even sitting in 200 degree water it would only open 1mm at the most. Guess if its supposed to open around 8mm then it really is bad. I was going to put it back on and I cracked the thermostat housing
Now I have to spend money on a thermostat and the housing! I'm more pissed that I have to wait longer to finally ride my bike

Man... I didn't realize those housings where that easy to crack. I agree though, the thermostat is done for.
