Temp Sensor with f4i gauges

Default Temp Sensor with f4i gauges

ok this is going to sound a bit random, pointless and somewhat interesting, but with the cold weather, the f4i gauge, and my original f3 sensor, my temp reads 220*f at start when its 50*f outside.

It climbs quickly to the 270 marker in under 30 seconds of running obviously, but there's a period there where the temp sensor is actually picking it up in cold weather before the red light comes on.

So i'm sure this crossed some of your minds --
I am wondering if there's a cheap alternative to a 40.00
600rr temp sensor (which involves me possibly breaking it off in my block) to drop the temperature.

Is there anyway to put something inline (like a resistor or something of that nature) on the temp sending wire that can change the temperature by 170*f? I don't know much about how the sensor works, but if it's possible, i'd like to know and at least try and attempt something of that nature.

EDIT: maybe some rheostats?

That would be pretty trick. It seems as though if it is reading too high then it would be possible to throw a resistor in the mix and drop it down to be accurate. A rheostat would be great for fine tuning the temp. Maybe when I get home tonight, since I already have the thermo unit out of my F3. I will place the tip in some hot water with a constant temp and see if there is a way to dial it in with a rheostat and determine the proper amount of resistance. I hope this works, then I can take the $50 thermo unit from the 900rr back that I bought from the stealership.

The fix for this is to put the 900rr temp sensor in the bike.

I happen to have one, $40 shipped if you're interested. New in packaging from honda...

I've noticed this too. It seems like the temp may be off by like 170 degrees or something. I found this to be interesting and probably what we need to do. Link. It wont apply directly to the coolant fan, but for the temp sensor resistor. I will try and do some calculations tonight.

yea im aware, and i might just take you up on that offer,
however the biggest pain is installing it without breaking the f3 one.
plus it's fun, and a new way of doing it.
also, its like 3 bucks from radioshack.


i don't need to know the exact temp,
but a good +-20 should be good enough, plus i can do away with the red temp light

that's interesting,
i think it's going to come down to using 2 or 3 rheostats in a series to drop the total temp, and then measuring the drop across all 3, and then building a permanent resistance to wire in without them.

This is prolly going to take a week, but i'll keep you guys posted.

Yea.. it seems Honda didn't design the temp sensor to come back out... lol

My calculations are pointing to a 4.7 Ohm resistor. But, I dont think that's right. Here's what info I have. Maybe someone else can figure this out.

Stock temp sensor
Temp Resistance
176F 45-60Ohms
248F 10-20Ohms

The gauges show 220F when it is 50F outside. Mine is the exact same as spicymeowmix. So the gauge is off by at least 170F. So I need to bring it down by that much.

Hell I think I'm just gonna pick up a variety pack of resistors today and start low..... I'll keep u guys posted!!

You know I was doing some more research, and I like your thinking here.. Dial in your resistance! I didn't even think about that. That's pretty cool.

I started to work on this last night. I thought that a baby thermometer would give me an accurate measurement of the water temp. When I tested the water, the thermometer told me the highly accurate measurement of "HI" I guess I will be by the store to buy a dial thermometer tonight.
