Default Starting issues

Hello all! I'm brand new to bikes but not new to working on engines. Today I picked up a 1997 600 cbr f3 from my uncle. He informed me if the bike sits for any period of time he had to remove the tank and poor gas straight into the carbs to get it to start. Once it would start all was fine. Any idea what the issue could be? Loosing prime? Carbs gummed up? Thanks for any help. PS this thing looks ment to be 22 years old.

Hey use to ride it to work so it would start at the end of the day. I think he said if it sits 2 or 3 days it won't start. He would then have to take the tank off and pour fuel in the carbs again to get it to start.

That doesn't make too much sense. The bowls will have enough to get it to start and run all by themselves.

If the bike has say for a while it's a safe bet the carbs need a thorough cleaning and syncing.

The bike did sit for a long time before he purchased it. I figured a good cleaning couldn't hurt. Just wanted some info before I started tossing money at it. I wasn't aware they had to be synced though.

These carbs are very good but they must be spotless on the inside.

The shape this thing is in it has to have sat for a long time. I mean it's almost spotless for 22 years of age. 19,196 miles.

Update: Just put some fuel in a spray bottle and sprayed into the intake and got it to start. Started out very sluggish and wouldn't take gas it would die. After letting it idle it revs up. Any idea an around about cost to have the carbs serviced?

While I had it running I did notice a fuel leak. Noticable fuel spot on the ground. Maybe the leak has to do with the no start.
