Default Replacing the speedometer gauge.

I found a ebay speedo gauge found here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=250082661731
I have a broken trip on my 97 F3. Is the replacement pretty straight forward? Are there instructions available?

Thanks

I believe it just pulls off once you take the upper fairings off. Then you just have to take the speedo and tach cables off put them on the new one and put it back together.

There are 3 8mm bolts securing the cluster by tabs. One on each side at the top, and one in the center on the bottom.

Take the upper fairings off and there's no way you could screw that up.

Might get a little bit complicated when you take apart the gauges to install the speedo. May require some soldering, but that's purely speculation.

Wow, I never looked at the link...

If you're repairing a broken trip meter - it'll likely be broken in the most common area, which is has nothing to do with the actual speedometer, it's the tabs and spring inside the cluster. Almost impossible to repair.

You need a new cluster, not speedometer.

so what your saying is i need the entire gauge cylinder assemble. I believe the ebay is only for the face, needle, odo, trip. anyone have link to instructions or a exploded view?

Yes, you need a complete cluster. I can say with almost certainty it's the little spring housing that the trip button rests in that is broken - which is molded onto the actual cluster.

I've seen them go for between $20-$50. If you find one - generally there is a tab broken off somewhere. As long as the bottom tab and one of the top tabs are still in place the cluster will sit still for you.

Good luck.

thanks. On second look at the ebay posting, i see it also comes with the trip reset button that you speak of. Is the little spring housing included in there?

No. As I said, it's molded into the cluster plastic. The spring isn't what breaks, it's the housing itself. You'll need a new cluster.
