regulator problems???

I have a 96 f3, and seem to have charging problems...The bike was running fine then just died while running..when i tried to start it back up i found that the battery was shot...after replacing the battery she started up and ran for all of 10 minutes before the battery was shot again...i charged it again and checked the rectifier before starting it up...i noticed that the connector inside was all black..a little charred.....so my question is this...could this have been caused by a bad rectifier which shorted out and caused the wires to burn or do i have a short which took the rectifier out???? either way i know that the rectifier is most likey shot from either a short or from it going bad so i have ordered another one, but i don't want to install it only to blow it again due to something else....could the stator cause this to happen....thanks for any help....want to get back on the road soon...

Make sure you repair the connector at the regulator. I would also check the connection between the bike harness and the stator. It is located in the battery box and under the tank. You will see a large white (may be discolored from overheating) with 3 prongs. If this connection has melted, you can purchase a repair kit from Honda.

I think I might be having the same problem andI'm needing to check the eletrical system. So I'm going to use that link you posted to check it. I want to go ahead and buy a Multimeter. But I'm not really wanting to spend $100 just for this one problem. So I went to Northern Tool's website and found a couple between $10 and $50(Which is what I really want to spend). But am needing to know if this will be okay or if I need to get a more complicated and higher quality meter.

I found this one for $10

This one for $20

And finally this one for $50

I'll get the $50 if necesarry but would rather get the $10 one since I won't be using it much.

I'm also pretty sure this is a problem. So I'll try to figure out what all that junk is and get that sorted out too.
