Rear end feels loose at high speed
 

Hello all,

My rear tire feel very loose at high speed such as on the highway. I took in on the highway for the first time this year and I actually had to pull into the right lane and back down to a lower speed it felt that loose.

The tire pressure is good. The tires themselves are in really good condition (I'll post a pic tonight). The only thing I can think of so far is that I needed to adjust the chain slack last year and maybe the back tire is out of alignment. It appears ok based on the side marking on the swingbar, so to me if its out of alignment, it's not by much. Could that do it? Is there anything else that would cause the back end to feel so loose.

Would suggest your suspension , sag and rebound need setting up, has any one altered the height of the bike , changed the front end?

I'm thinking there is an issue with the tire or balance issue. It may appear to be in good condition, but may still have an issue.

No one has altered the height of the bike. I am the second owner and I’m pretty confident the none of the suspension has been touched prior to me and I never have as well. It was in storage for 9 years or so. I fired it up last year and just finally was on the highway and noticed the rear tire feeling loose.

Here are pics of the rear tire...the tires themselves have very low milage however they have years on them due to not being ridden for a while. I’m going to go through and check the suspension and sag today.

If you have a 9 year old tire, that'd be the 1st place to look. Get it changed and see if that makes a difference. Tires do have a shelf life.

From your description it would suggest that the bike should not be ridden till you have identified what is causing your issue.

You mention that the bike was in storage for 9 years so a thorough going over won’t hurt and will probably reveal your issue and possibly potential others.
As per previous posts, tyres and suspension or something else totally . Swing arm bearings another thing that could cause your loose feel.

Ok. I’m leaning towards tires as well.

As far as rear shock, anyone know where to find the factory setting on this? It is set to “2” right now. I checked the manual and can’t find that factory spec.

I also check the rear suspension sag (hopefully thats the correct term). From the spec sheet CaBaRet was kind enough to include, my rider sag is about 38mm and the spec is for 30-40mm. (I am 175lbs).

It seems as though it was the tires. New set and its a worked of difference. Still going to go through the suspension setting anyway. Thanks again guys!
