RE: question about rear sprockets?
the number is the chain size.. 520 is smaller than a 525, which is smaller than a 530.. 520 conversions remove some rotating weight compared to the stock 525, but at the expense of chain life. The 525 would be stronger than the 520 in tensile strength, but its not really an issue..
I did a 520 conversion on mine, stock 43 tooth in rear, and -1 tooth in the front..
decreasing the front number of teeth, or increasing the rear number of teeth, give the bike better acceleration, but the top speed is lower.
In general, taking one tooth off the front, is the same as adding 3.5 to the rear.. so if you went -2 in the front it'd be equal to +7 in the rear.
At one point I had -1 and +5, and the acceleration was great, could power wheelie 1st and 2nd, and could clutch 3rd up, but I ride the highways alot and didnt like the fact that at 70mph, i was turning around 9,000rpms, so i went to a stock rear (43T) and am very happy now.

RE: question about rear sprockets?
Is dropping one tooth in the front always the same as adding 3.5 in the back? Does it change per what bike you are doing the change to, or is that a pretty universal ratio? I am debating dropping 1 or 2 teeth in the front. My buddy is telling me drop 2 but i am just thinking of dropping 1, mabey w/ adding a bit in the rear...I dunno yet what I am going to do. I dropped one tooth on the front of my last bike it was a tuna 600 but it didnt really seem to make that much of a difference. anyways just thought i would float that question. thanks for any response.

RE: question about rear sprockets?
You should notice the difference, unless it's already been dropped one tooth.. It's pretty universal about the -1 = +3.5 to all bikes, it's not always exactly 3.5, but you could prolly round to it.
It's generally recommended to not drop more than 1 or 2 on the front sprocket, due to increased load on the output shaft bearings, and the chain has to make too tight of a turn to make it around that smaller sprocket.. That being said, I usually only run a -1 front and if I want more, I add it to the rear sprocket.. rear sprockets aren't that expensive, but I think i've found my combo with a -1 and 43tooth on my '98. Great on the highway, but a noticible increase in acceleration with the -1 only..
