I dont have a decal but im pretty sure off is in the middle, on is straight up, and reserve is straight down. Hope that helps Murdo.

Wrong. Reserve is when you turn the petcock all the way clockwise or up. Closed is when its horizontal. And regular open is when petcock points all the way down.

Pardon my ignorance, but what should the standard position be? I usually keep mine all the way up, is closed (horizontal) any better? Thanks

All the way up, or turned fully clockwise, means you're running in Reserve. It also means get ready to walk if you forget to gas up. Because you used your reserve fuel.

Horizontal, your bike will run... For about a minute. You turned off the fuel supply to the engine. Useful when removing the tank. Terrible for riding further than down the driveway

Turn her down, or fully counter-clockwise. Thats normal ride position. It doesn't allow the bike to use all the gas in the tank until its switched to Reserve. Since our bike doesn't have a fuel indicator (and its inadvisable to attempt to open the tank and try to maintain a straight line at 70 mph), bad mpg / forgetfulness won't make you push her 2-3 blocks when its 90F wearing a leather jacket and helmet (like I did :icon_doh:)
