New Owner of 96 CBR
Hey new guy here just wanted to introduce myself. Well this is my first bike and I picked her up last Friday. Its a 1996 CBR 600 with 17K miles. I thought I got a good for $1700 bucks previous owner said only needs to do the yearly maintenance.
Mines the Red one
Things I noticed right away with the bike.
-It would not idle without the choke on
-chain was dirty and rusty
-buddy rode it says front brakes pulsate when hard braking
-left turn signal on stays on if rider holds it in
My friend had to ride it back as I don't even have my permit yet. He said it boggs and is dangerous! haha We finally get her back and I had some time yesterday to do a tear down and clean the carbs.
Thank god for youtuber 199xray.
Finally got them out after about 2 hours of tearing down the bike.
I finally start to take apart the carbs. Now with each one of them this top part of the jet was just laying inside next to the floats.
I was pretty upset that who ever did these last had no clue how to put them back together. I mean this is my first time doing this and it was pretty obvious where it goes.
I got them all put together last night about 2am. I for the life of me couldn't figure out that spring bolt nut thing for the choke on how it goes back on so I gave up and went to sleep.
Next on the agenda list
-clean the chain and have it inspected
-Oil Change
-Change coolant
-spark plugs
-clean off surface rust
-Thinking also of taking the headers off and re sand them and wrap them up (has a full Yoshimara Exhaust and Header but the header is really rusty)
Hopefully I get this all done by this weekend. I want to start riding. I'm pretty please with the bike I couldn't expect it to be perfect with the amount I had paid for it. I just didn't know it was in that bad of shape till I really got down and took it apart.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. Looks like a great find. I don't agree on your bike being that bad. Most of what you're doing is just things that the PO didn't do. But easy to rectify with a little elbow grease and sweat. Looks like there may be some leftover glue residue on the upper fairing near the headlight. A little gas on a rag will take that off, as will kerosene or alcohol.
Good luck and let us know if we can be of any help.

Dumped my bike yesterday. Took a corner and didn't lean hard enough and hit the curb. Left side frame slider is gone clutch pedal is bent (I bent it back) and fairings are cracked on the left side. I was going about 45 when I hit the curb. flew off and hit the lamp post on my left back. I'm super sore but it still runs and ride. Yup I even rode to work today.
