Check out Scorpio, they have a paging remote that tells you what is happening to your bike up to 1/2 mile away (from someone bumped into it to someone is trying to hot wire it). The pricier units have a perimeter sensor, a battery backup and even an anti-hijacking feature (press two buttons on the remote and the thief has 20 seconds before the bike is completely dead, which lets him get far enough away from you so he doesn't come back for you). The newer models even feature RFID that turns off the alarm when you get close to your bike.

One of my buddies just got a Scorpio system installed a couple weeks ago. We spent quite a bit of time messing around with the sensors and "testing" its capabilities. It's a great disabling system to deter people from certain types of tampering, but in the end if someone REALLY wants your bike, they will get it.

** Warning: Old guy story ahead **
When I lived outside of DC, there was a rash of thefts within one of the clubs I rode with regularly. Turns out there was a group running a chop shop that would just pull up with a truck and a bunch of guys and lift a bike right up and into the back of the truck.

Only something like a Lo-Jack system is going to help get your bike back in those cases.
