Default Mechanical whine/clatter?

My F3 is making a mechanical whining sound in all gears, it starts around 4500rpm. In addition, second and third gear at low rpms sometimes make a sort of falling metal sound. I don't really know how to explain it, it's like lots of little *tink* sounds happening quickly. Could be that all gears make this noise too and I just can't hear it over the wind. I'm hoping that together these sounds mean I need a new CCT, but I'm worried it might be more serious. Anyone have any ideas?

well, from what I saw yesterday I'm inclined to say the noises only occur when the clutch is engaged. But the truth is, I never thought to keep it in gear, disengage the clutch, and then rev it back up to where it would have been. I'll be sure to try that tonight when I ride. What does it mean if it's only when the clutch is disengaged, or if it happens all the time?

A whine would be a gear on gear deal, so I'm thinking tranny.

That was my fear as well, but I still have no idea what the clink sounds would be. If you've ever heard a "rainstick", that's exactly what it sounds like. I couldn't think of anything in the tranny that would cause a noise like that.

The rainstick sound your describing is probably the cct which is prone to fail but an easy fix. There is a ton of info on here about it. As far as the whine my local shop lost the o-ring that went in between the sprocket/cush drive assembly and hub so now any time in get on the throttle it makes a strange whining sound. Just something to check.

Well, I just went for a 15 minute ride and checked some conditions on the way. Not only do the noises not occur with the clutch disengaged, they don't occur with it engaged unless I'm on the throttle. As soon as I let off the gas, no matter what the rpms, the noises stop. I'll replace the cct, and cr250, do you have a suggestion where I should start troubleshooting the possible issue you described? Sounds like my noise meets the description. Thanks for the replies and suggestions so far.

The cush drive assembly I'm referring to is the piece that the rear sprocket is bolted to. If you remove the rear wheel that whole piece slides out of the hub. There is a o-ring in between the two pieces

Good luck tracking it down hope its something simple. Was also just thinking if the chain is to tight it can make some excess drivetrain noise.

Thanks man, I'll have to check that. WRT the CCT, I see a lot on here about the OEM vs a manual CCT. Either of you guys have an opinion? I'm inclined to just go OEM because my local bike shop would probably have that.
