Default machining rotors

can you turn bike rotors? i noticed that mine have some little grooves and a bit of rust on them. i don't know if they're thick enough to turn, though... possible on a bike or no?

No, bike rotors are not designed to be turned. If they're badly scored, then they need to be replaced. I personally haven't come across any rotors that actually needed replacing. But most bikes don't have that many miles on them. Minor scoring and rusting is normal since they're steel and exposed to the elements. The friction surface is not fixed to the central hub, but actually float to allow for expansion due to heating from braking.

hrm... they don't need to be replaced right away, but i'll do them this season... can i buy just the friction surface or are they actually loosely riveted in?

They're fixed. It's an assembly. You buy the entire thing. How thin have yours gotten ? Mine are 4.4mm, but the service limit to a groove is 3.5mm.

damn. couldn't tell you for sure. they're not terrible, i just want to get them done. looks like if i have to buy it as an assembly it'll wait a bit since they're bloody expensive. when it gets a bit warmer and i can stand being outside again i'll have a look.
