have to roll bike in gear like a foot to start?

ok so i got a 98 f3 about a year ago the thing hauled ass and was very responsive but the last few months its just been acting strange. ive checked the battery, stator, plugs, filter, all good has new fuel pump and carbs were cleaned not to long ago.

some times i have to roll it in gear like a foot or 2 till the engine turns over onces or twice then it fires up no prob. a mechanic at a shop told me it might be my starter gear might be chipped and not making contact with the flywheel. next problem is that some times it seems like its running like new plenty of power and response but then it just starts lacking some times randomly like its struggling to accelerate (worse in low gears) ( it changes how it runs every few times its turned on and off). while its running nice i can cruise at any gear any rpm fine and smooth but when it running poor i cant really cruise above 4500 till high gears cause then it seems like its jumping forward and then slowing down kind of like its bucking. could these problems be related ? any one have this happen to them before?

Does it just spin the starter, if you don't roll it forward? Like rolling it is 'syncing'
the starter? If so, your mechanic is probably right. That is definetly, where I would be looking.

As far as the power loss....

Check out these threads, this is the historic issue. The R/R's are notorious for
failure.
You might also, try Seafoam or similar fuel treatment for a few tanks and
see if that helps.
