Hello Forum! New member, new bike ... to me anyway. First time I've ridden a bike in 10 years but had a few Fireblades in the past and a CBR600F F2 as well as 3 CBR400RRs. Always loved my Honda CBRs, this is my 9th!
So I just bought a '96 CBR600F3. 40 K on the clock, cosmetically disgusting, broken tabs and cracks everywhere, needs fixing and repainting ... no problem, I can do that. Mechanically it's generally been a daily use bike until replaced a few weeks ago. It's not much of a looker but I think there is some potential ... it was also very cheap and has a current MOT. I want to use it for cheap daily transport so looking for some general advice about this model from anyone.
What, if any, are the common issues with this bike?
Anything in particular I should be on the look out for?
I plan on giving it a standard look (maybe a 1997? scheme though .. black / silver I think looks awesome, quite like 2 of the Blades I had) Anyone know where I can get replacement decals to original spec?
Hi and welcome to the forum. F3's are great bikes. Some things that come to mind are the fuel pumps are not that reliable. The switches on the handlebars often get gunked up and the contacts need to be cleaned. Sometimes the solder joints inside those same switches can break lose.
I bought a set here and they fit quite well. I did have to open a couple of the bolt holes but nothing that someone thta has the ability to remove fairings couldn't do. They will also do custom paint/stickers. Motorcycle Fairings, Motorcycle Fairing Kits | FairingMaster
It did take about 3 months to get them but it was worth the wait. Unfortunately I totalled the bike with less than 200 miles on the new setup and I didn't get any pics.
its much more finished thatn that though, engine is in, wheels on , forks refurbed .... will get a new vid out in the next couple of days.
In the meantime I need some advice. ....
Carburetor heater tube. Here's some pics of how it was and the manual photos. I cannot for the life of me get it to refit. The pipe im struggling with is the lower righ thand water pump pipe that routes up in to a thermostat valve and then on to the right side of the carb. The manuals show that the valve clamps to the middle of the 3 bolts on the starter motor mount. So the hose as it came off routed directly down under the water pump, then immediately back up behind it and in to the vale. I cannot remember now whether the vale was clamped to the starter or not and irritatingly none of my videos show it. Right now it seems whatever I do the pipe is too short or massively kinking / straing the join at the water pump.
Am i being dumb here? I feel like maybe at some point the pipe had a gnarly end and someone shortened it by an inch or two to fix the issue and then routed the pipe as i found it. Am i right on the route of this pipe / clamp and is my solution just to buy a bit of hose from vale to pump that is 2 inches longer?
Also ... There's an earth wire I've completely lost memory on. Im sure its in the manual somewhere but if anyone happens to know. I thought it clamped to the same starter mount bolt to be honest (its a wire about 16 inches llong with connections at either end to allow it to be clamped under a bolt. Where does this go?
