Fork Seals...help?
So, as the title says i need some help with these. Me and some buddies just did them going off some write ups online. So we get it all apart get it all back together and they are leaking pretty bad. What could be causing this? Are the seals not set in far enough or what. I used the manual to measure out the oil amount, we cleaned all parts before reassembly...i have no clue help would be much appreciated.
Ok, So I assume you replaced them with new seals? The seals have to be drifted back into place, so the seat nice & tight. I've used a socket that fits the diameter of the seals & just lightly tapped it in to place, you have to lubricate the seals with a light smear of grease or (believe it or not) fork oil. The thing that can cause oil past the seals, is warpage (not seated evenly) or scoring on the fork surface by over zealous use of a screwdriver, digging the old one out (yep I've done that one before). If your using the old seals, then you have either damaged them, getting them out or you have put them back in the wrong forks. If you have done a correct job with new seals, then your reassembly is not right. Look for the manual on this site: www.stephygee.com.
Their seated correctly, when they don't drift any further into the tube, you got to be carefull though, if you lube em up, they go in easy, (a lot of guys will soak em for a few hours in fork oil so that they expand). Just don't go hammering the crap out of em.

Did you replace the seals with new ones? Did you get OEM seals? I had a friend use the aftermarket seal kits and they didn't seat properly. They leaked like like a sib and he ended up using OEM seals.
Ok thanks for the replies, i did use new seals they were aftermarket off ebay. Now how much oil goes into each fork? I put in almost the whole bottle, we measured them out going off of the manual. I put about the whole bottle in each one but a guy at my work says he never has seen a bike use more than 11oz per fork and i used 15.7 so is that 15.7 for both or for each? Thanks
yeah 15.7 each, or basically one bottle.
Did you seat the new seals far enough into the fork? How far down into the tube are they? I just rebuilt mine and they are about 1/4 inch into the tube, maybe a pinch less. And just to make sure, you repaced both the dust seals and the fork seals?

like Scrufdog said, you used the right amount. It's either you didn't get the seals in all the way or the aftermarket seals are a piece of junk. Were you able to get the clip ring between the oil and dust seal back in? I you couldn't get it back in because the seal was too high, that means that your oil seal isn't seated properly. I just did mine this weekend and didn't have a problem. I went with the OEM seals.
Screw it, im taking it in. Thanks for all the help im guessing its the seals that were bad i did everything right THREE times with a friend and they still leak so im just gonna take it to my local shop today. Any guesses on approx. prices?
The amout you'll spend depends on the labor rate of the shop. I think a common rate is about $80/hr and it'll probably take a shop about an hour and half. The shop will also charge you for the parts and oil which could be an additional $60. So you're looking at a potential fork job of $200.
