F4i gauge set and Air Vent solenoid mod

So, when you do the F4i gauge mod, you ground out the air vent solenoid feed wire. This wire on the original gauges grounds out when the bike hits 12 mph. This switch the solenoid from the 2 small front vents to an intake from the air box.

Thinking about it and looking at wiring diagrams and the DAI setup, it seems to me that if the solenoid never switches anymore, you could eliminate the whole system. That includes the relay, about 4 feet of hose from the front to under the seat, you could replace the solenoid with a hose joint, loose the pink wire hookup to ground, and if your really froggy... start pulling out wires from the harness.

When my 900rr temp sensor gets here, I'm gonna try it out to make sure I'm right. You could basically loose a pound or 2 of weight, and a decent amount of hose and wire clutter.

Anyone think of any reason why this is wrong?

RE: F4i gauge set and Air Vent solenoid mod

I did the F4i gauge swap on my quad while doing the F3 engine swap. See post: https://cbrforum.com/m_551869/tm.htm I've been wondering the same with the solenoids since I am not using any of the ram-air system or factory airbox. Yesterday I hooked my vacuum lines up to the best of my understanding and ripped the quad down my street. It seemed to run just fine both below and above the 12 mph mark so i'm thinking the whole solenoid system is a bit of a joke?

Oh yeah, when you put the new temp sensor in, be sure to put some penetrating oil on the old one and let it soak before you try to remove it. The cheap brass snapped off on mine when i tried to loosen it and i had to use and easy-out to get it out. The 900rr sensor won't thread in completely, but it will come very close so don't force it. Mine stopped about 1-2 turns before the end but it seals perfect.

RE: F4i gauge set and Air Vent solenoid mod

I just completed the F4 swap and my bike ran like crap. It would hesitate real bad around 4-5k when I cracked the throttle. No matter if it was going down the road or sitting still in the garage, same thing every time. Here's what I did with my solenoid. I took all the hose out of the front and off the solenoid. Cut and taped the wires to the solnoid and removed that. I put one of the filters on the large hose sticking out of the back of the airbox. (the one under and in the middle). That made it run a little better but then I got to thinking, the airbox is sealed. So I drilled 4 1/2 inchs holes in the top of the box. Problem solved. This thing has more throttle responce than it ever did since I've had it.

Oh and the 900rr solenoid works like a champ. No more little red light and it shows actual temp. 40 bucks well spent.

sounds like you didn't ground out the pink wire on the F3's wiring. It woulda cured your issues mooseknuckle

That's ok. I did ground it out so I probably have a problem somewhere else. Well, I guess I don't any more because I removed pretty much everything. It helped a lot with cleaning it up a bit and it actually pulls stronger in the beginning.
