F3 Wont start!

Default F3 Wont start!

I bought this bike from a friend of mine who didn't run it for a few years. I took apart the carburetor and cleaned everything out. I followed the how to in the link below.

I have checked the spark plugs I am getting a spark to all 4 (I do not own a multimeter so I do not know if they are getting the correct voltage), none of the hoses look dry rotted, all though some are missing the hose clamps. When we finished cleaning out the carburetors and put them back on it started and ran for a few minutes (I think it only started because of the carburetor cleaner, but then ran off the little gas in the tank for a few minutes.) Oh and the battery is brand new.

I can't get it to start, anyone have any ideas... Something I didn't think of?

Check to see if you have gas in the carbs. If not, check the fuel pump for operation.

do you have the choke on when trying to start? lever towards you is on..away or "up" is off..easiest way to ensure its ONLY fuel related is to spray bursts of starter fluid into the ram air when turning the bike over..if it fires..then you need to start tracing your fuel..(petcock, fuel lines, pump, carbs, etc..) a common possibility is that when putting the tank into position to bolt down, you kinked the line going from the tank to the pump, so do a quick check that that line is not pinched off or bent..

Yes I have the choke on, when the bike was rebuilt (because its a salvage ) a fuel pump was never installed. So its gravity fed. I do have gas in the carbs, and when I pull them off I can see gas on the gaskets where the carbs meet the motor.

Will - I tired what you suggested with carb cleaner, and it started and ran for a few minutes on gas until I turned it off... So to my knowlage its getting gas.

Does anyone know the voltage out put I am supposed to get from the ignition coils, I am going to barrow a multimeter from my unit next week.

My new thought process so tell me if I am wrong, maybe while there is enough voltage to ignite the carb cleaner, which is easier to ignite than gas, but there is not enough to light the gas? So it runs when started with the carb cleaner because 2 of the 4 cylinder are keeping it going? ( I get a better spark from 1 and 4 than 2 and 3. ) Please someone tell me if I am wrong in anyway.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe I got the Pilot screws either to far in or out. So would anyone know the default adjustments? ( I am just trying to eliminate possibles with this one, I followed the how to to the letter)

gravity fed is fine as long as the pump is taken out of the line.

did you mess with the "D" screws? If not, then there really isnt much adjustment that you could have thrown off as far as the jets. if you did, your going to hope that you didnt..

easiest way to check for fuel in the carbs is by loosening a drain screw on one of the fuel bowls..its a horizontally facing, flat head screw. there is supposed to be a hose connected to all four bowls, (to direct the draining fuel) but most times these are missing. if you crack one of these screws, and fuel begins to drain, then you have fuel in the carbs..

I would think if the bike runs on starting fluid, then it should run on gas. so IMO i dont think your problem is related to the plugs or coils. are you sure you cleaned the slow jets properly? the first time i cleaned my carbs, i thought i did a pretty good job, but that was not the case..the only way i was able to get my slow jets clean was by shoving a .009 guitar string through them!

Take the carbs back apart and reclean them. Sometimes pieces from the tank will clog the jets if a bike has been sitting. Drain the tank and refill it with new gas. Put everything back together and give it a squirt of starter fluid to help it get going without killing the batt. Make sure the choke is on and start it. It should fire right up and start pulling the new fuel within a few seconds.

Well you are right I wish I wouldn't of messed with the D screws (But considering how much stuff came off of them I kinda had to), I got the bike to start. We moved all the pilot screws to 2 1/8th turns out and we took the ignition coils off testing them with a multimeter and cleaned the leads into the spark plug wires. Now it will run until it warms up then when we take the coke off it starts to run rough and dies.

OH and I am now running with the air box/tank off. I set up a funnel and tube for fuel.

is your idle set correctly? the choke bumps the idle. if its running and you remove choke, and it dies..it sounds like you need to adjust it..

also..your going to need a set of mercury gauges to reset or "match" your carbs since changing the d screw settings
