Default F3 Rear Shock Lifespan

I've got 38K miles on my '97 F3 now. The bike doesn't feel as tight as it used to in the corners and doesn't quite hold a straight line like it used to. I also noticed today that it was a bit more 'bouncy' in the corners. I think it's the rear shock going out.

What do you guys think the life expectancy for the rear shock should be? Is there an easy fix for the stock shock (recharge, etc)?

It is recommended that your suspension (forks and shock) be serviced every 12k miles. You are LONG overdue!.

I asked about the rear shick here once...

All I got was a link to another forum. I didn't read it as all I asked was simply if it was something that can be done by the home mechanic.

Forks, from what I hear, are fairly straightforward. You just have to take your time and do it right the first time or you'll be doing it all over. I'll let you know the specifics after this weekend, I'm replacing the seals so I can finally install my new Brembo SS black, powder-coated brake lines!

Woot!

ARe you just changing the seals? or are you going to do the fork oils as well?

Those brake lines sound sweet. How much did you get them for?

the price will vary depending on who you go to. From what I've seen, forks and rear shock are generally ~$100 each on the low end but can go much more if you go to a shop that has a specialty (and reputation) for doing suspension work.

Or is it cheaper to do it ourselves?
The forks you could probably do yourself (though I suggest you do it with someone whose done this before). You'll need a fork seal driver but I've heard of people making do with other stuff. The rear really requires specialized tools that you likely won't have. I sugges that get done by a shop who knows what their doing.

They were $140 for the fronts. The rear was $69. They are made for the 2003-2006 600RR so we'll see what happens. My buddy at the shop is confident that it'll come out good.

I'mraplacing fork oil as well... prolly isn't even any oil left in the forks, to be honest. Sucks.

How longs a piece of string?. Life of shocks depends on how they have been treated, wot sort of roads & wot sort of weight they have had to carry. I would be looking at your swing arm bearings as well, same symptoms you describe if their really worn. put it on its stand and check the side ways movement.
