Your problem sounds like the cct to me. I had a very similar ticking noise and ounce i changed mine it went away.

Have you checked your plugs to see if they are fouled out? If your running to rich your plugs may have fouled while it was struggling to rev which in my experience with bikes and cars will stall one out and make it very had to start back.

I have some new plugs I will fit soon. The bike seems to run fine on a gravity feed strait from the tank.

Does anyone know what I am checking for if I remove the CCT?

Thanks

I personally just changed mine. I wasn't sure how strong it needed to be or what else to check on. I went back with an OEM automatic tensioner cause I didn't know what brands were or weren't good. I hear a manual tensioner is much better though.

I installed an APE manual CCT. It took about 20 min from start to finish. Super easy to replace. I also started to hear a little noise from the engine. After this mod, all is well now! And they are way better!

So with the manual ones, how do you know what the correct tension is? Do you just screw it in until tight?

Basically you want to start with the adjustment bolt all of the way out. Start the bike up. Its gonna rattle and clank like something you've never heard. Its ok. Tighten the bolt until the bike sounds normal. Turn the bolt another quarter to half turn and tighten it up. That's it.

Have you checked your fuel pump plugs? I had a few random issues and after banging my head against the wall from tearing everything apart I noticed the wiring was slightly burnt, touched it and it fell apart, check your wiring and plugs for burning

Well the fuel pump issue is fixed now. But my engine is still tapping like something else. Doesn't seem to matter whether its hot or cold, but I'm sure its getting louder. As i previously mentioned, i can hear it most when pulling off from lights and accelerating. I cannot hear it when the engine is decelerating. If it was the CCT wouldn't it make the noise all the time? Also, if it was a bad valve it would also make the noise all the time? I'm thinking its maybe a loose inlet rubber on one of the carbs? or a leaky exhaust gasket. I have bought some new exhaust gaskets, but it looks like a right PITA to fit them.

Is it a metal on metal sound? And is it in time with the engine? I've seen some metal on metal clicking and clanking sounds turn out to be a rod bearing, should be a noticeable noise tho, more of a deep knock than a tick
