Clutch Cable/ Clutch Problems
Hi, I just bought my bike 2 months ago so I'm not sure what is normal and what is not.
throughout one day, I was having to pull the clutch lever further and further towards the handle in order to shift into first gear (disengage the clutch). eventually I could not pull the leaver in far enough for the clutch to fully disengage. I thought it might be the cable and sure enough I pulled on the cable once I took it off the lever and it broke pretty easily. But.... I checked to make sure the clutch still worked and I pulled the leaver manually on the engine, it felt like I was turning on a light switch. I had to make no effort to pull it back with my finger. Did the clutch break? or is it usually that easy to pull the leaver on the engine? I also don't hear the clutch disengaging when the bike is running and I pull the lever. thanks for the help |
With the bike off and in gear, can u push it?

Sounds like a frayed clutch cable. If your clutch is still working at all, it's hanging on by a thread. You should N O T be operating this bike AT ALL. Trace the cable and feel for frays, then pop open the trans cover and do a visual inspection. Given the severity of your description, the problem should be visually obvious.

thanks, yea.... the cable was bad. I also pulled the trans cover and everything looked normal, no scratches or dents or anything out of place. The one thing that was odd was I could not push the clutch in and out. it seems to be stuck or frozen. It also looks to be stuck in the half way out position from what I see. I took some pictures so you guys can see. Any more troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated since I am not familiar with motorcycle clutches. Thanks again

When you pull in on the clutch, the cable pulls on an arm. That arm rotates a shaft that's mounted in that cover that you removed. When the shaft rotates, it pushes on a short little pin and that pin is what presses on the end of the shaft that you're looking at here. Check the operation of that pin and shaft. You should not be able to just press in on this shaft here. At least not without putting a fair amount of pressure on it.

ok, everything on the tras cover (arm, shaft and pin) are working correctly. I guess I will find out if everything works when the new cable comes in. thanks

so..... the new clutch cable came in and something is not right with the clutch. The clutch is stuck in one place. It will not move out or in. How can I tell if the clutch is bad or if it just needs to be adjusted?.... because I find it pretty weird that it broke at the same time the cable did, while in my garage.

That could have been WHAT broke the cable. Cables rarely fray unless inappropraiate wear or tension is being placed on them. The goofy cable could have caused the pin to not align right, and kindof jam the clutch into an odd position (sorry for all the technical jargon). Try just removing and reinstalling the clutch.
