Carb Gaskets

So I cleaned my carbs over the weekend and when I took the piece of the air box off that holds the velocity stacks in, I noticed that the o-ring type gaskets are damaged and one was broken. Has anybody ever used RTV to make new ones? Maybe by putting some in the sealing surface and letting it harden?

The dealer wants $120 because you have to buy 4 carb rebuild kits just to get the one gasket.

I haven't tried that, but it's possible it could work. I can't imagine how those got damaged since they're not really exposed to anything. If you go to Ron Ayers you could drop that price to about $88. Considering that those are damaged, there is a good chance that the other gaskets are not in the best shape either. Personally I'd get the kits and replace them all. Many people never remove the Idle Air screw when cleaning the carburetors and that tiny O ring gets damaged from the solvents over time. Then they wonder why it won't idle properly or smooth or have that nice crisp throttle response.

The package on the left is the kit you're talking about.

Good luck.

Thanks I hadn't looked there. I'm going to need a bunch more parts so I tried it with the rtv just so i can get it running So I guess I'll see how it goes.
