best place/method to jack up a 98 cbr f3
I've been searching for the past couple days for the best method to jack my f3 up so i can do some work on the back. I've been reading that you can use the oil pan as a spot as long as you use some wood to disperse some of the weight from the bike?
I'm in the process of doing a vfr sssa, and fairing swap... and i've never lifted the bike up beyond using my rear lift for chain and tire maintenance.
I'm a diy'er and have been looking at different methods of doing this. I would use the foot pegs, but they're spring loaded, so that wont work, ive seen others use jack stands, but i dont know where these would go to give enough balance to the bike unless i tie it down to something?
I thought about getting a 1ton engine lift, but the bike would still swing a little, but would it be tolerable... and wtf would i do with the lift afterwards?
I don't object to working closer to the ground as long as i can get ample clearance for the work that needs to be done.
Thoughts? would be great!
Thanks, n

buy a rear stand? http://www.discountramps.com/motorcycle-stands.htm i wouldnt trust lifting my bike any other way... a bike is kind of heavy... to much could go wrong and it is to expensive to replace parts for stupid mistakes.

I use a hydralic bike lift. Gotta pull the lowers, but you were going to anyway, right?
Slide it under the center of the engine , just forward of the pegs. There are a couple of castings on the bottom of the engine there that will recieve the weight. I still had to add a couple of blocks under both sides to clear the exhaust (aftermarket headers). The stand has rings so you can use a couple of tow straps to secure the bike to the stand. Got mine at Harborfreight http://www.harborfreight.com/automot...lift-2792.html here's a link, so you can get the idea.

I use two cargo/ratchet straps, one at front and one at rear, to the loops on the stand. Pass it over top of bike (side to side), then loop it around a frame member. As you tighten them, slight adjustment to compensate for the pull to one side from the loop around frame. Kept my 98 CBR on one for about 2 weeks, CAREFULLY pushing and pulling it around my garage, no problem.

Summit Racing has one of those lifts on sale right now: (for the same price)
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CLK-GE2040/
..might be better quality since it's not HF?

thnx MadHattr059,
Im going to strip it down to the frame anyhow, its just a matter of how balanced i can get the bike on the hyd. lift. If i have to put blocks under it to support it anyhow, i suppose it would work. Looking at the lift, i don't see secure points where i could ratchet the bike down? nevermind, i see them at second glance.
in terms of weight distribution after ive taken the rear arm and tire off, i dont think it will be that bad, most of the weight is going to be centered with the engine. if i need to jam a 2x4 under the tripple to keep her from tipping thats ok.
Was thinking further that if i take the rear tire off, and notice too much play with the bike, i can rescue it easy enough.
they certainly make it hard for the DIY'er.
Thanks for all the feedback
