Default What's it worth?

I went and looked at an f2 today and I'm curious what other's opinions are as far as the price. He's asking 1700 for it and I don't want to pay that much.

Here's the deal... It's a 93, 11000 or so miles I think, fairings aren't very nice, it's going to need new tires very soon and probably a new chain soon. The fairings are broken and scratched up, he said the front fairing blew off while he was riding (he got it from an auction, it came in pieces, he didn't put all the bolts in, I guess...). Anyway, he said a friend tried to plastic weld most of it, but it doesn't look pretty at all. I wouldn't mind riding it that way for a couple of months, but I'm looking for a bike that's going to last me at least two years, and I know by the end of the summer I'll be wanting to put new plastic on.

NADA says very good condition is around 1800 and good condition is around 800. My boyfriend said to offer him no more than 1200, I was thinking maybe 13 or 14 at the most. He basically said he doesn't care if he sells it or not, so I don't know if he'll even be willing to come down at all on price, I just wanted to see what some other opinions were, if I'm not being fair or if it's actually worth around 17. Thanks.

Sounds like your boyfriend is closer to the mark. Although bikes in that price range aren't going to be known for their reliability.

From the sounds of it; tires and chain and maintenance, of course body work with labor, you will spend close to $1700 to get running safely. My opinion of course.

I guess it's a hard decision. I would say to think about the following though -

A 93 bike with only 11,000miles? Does he have a service history that backs up this claim?

He said the fairings blew off? Sounds odd to say the least. Have you checked the fairing stay to see if it's been knocked about and straightened? It's easy to see ones that have been in a crash - look for flaking paint around welds etc...

Now....If the bike IS completely legit, with only 11,000miles, where has it been kept during inactivity? 11,000 may mean a fresh engine, but bearings and bolts could be shot if it's been stored improperly.

If the bike is mechanically a1 and all the above checks out then bargain with him - don't pay him top whack money for a bike that needs stuff done. All bikes go through tyres/brake pads etc, so that's not too much of a deal, but fairings are a relatively big outlay for something that's not mechanical and won't make your bike any more reliable.

I wouldn't pay him what he's asking. And he's a liar when he says he doesn't care if it sells. You don't advertise something for sale if you don't want to sell it. He DOES want it sold.

There are tons of good CBR's out there and for less money than he's looking for. For example, 13 months ago I picked up my f2 CBR for £800 ($1200). The fairings top fairing had been replaced with a fibreglass one, but all other fairings were in fair condition. The bike had 24000 miles on the clock and had every bit of history you could imagine, all service receipts, when tyres had been fitted - I got two folders worth of history - including receipts for the replacement fairing. That was 2008 and $1200. Prices should be worse now!

In summary - if it's a good solid bike with oodles of history it's worth paying decent coin. You'll get a reliable and nice bike. Don't pay top money for a bike that needs stuff - even cosmetic stuff. Get the right bike and you'll love it. The wrong one and your hand will never be our of your pocket.

And if there is no history with the bike? Walk away. In fact, run away.

Thanks everyone. I'm trying to pick up something cheap, so I know it's not going to be perfect. I'm gonna think about it for a couple days and might call him and tell him 1200, if he doesn't want it that's fine, I'll keep looking. Thanks again!

i have a 93 cbr f2 with 15,000 miles when i bought it over the summer. the tires were pretty shot and the fairings where pretty fine other than repainted black. Its not the nicest bike but its great. I paid 1300 or 1400 for it and she wanted 1800.
