Default Warm R/R...Normal?

So, I put a new R/R on, and the bike's been starting and running fine. However, I did notice a "hot smell" yesterday as it was warming up. I took my seat off and felt the R/R and it was warm, not too hot to leave my finger on, but noticeably warm (keep in mind the bike had only been running for a few minutes).

Is this normal? My concern is that I had a problem other than a bad R/R and that if I don't fix that I'll burn this one up or something. Is that a legitimate concern? Thanks for all your help so far, and any input you have on this issue as well!

I don't want to give you any false sense of security, but I think those things are supposed to get a little warm as they are the item that burns off extra electricity. I think they are usually mounted to some sort of heat-sink plate too, which by nature would tell me that it is normal and expected that they warm up. The plate will help disburse the heat more quickly.

If your part is brand new, that could be the "new toaster" syndrome. Where they give off a little stench the first time they heat up.
