My project F2
Firstly I would like to say, please redirect me to where this ought to be if I am in the wrong place. Not really a how-to, but more of I am going to be doing a few things to my bike and will be documenting it as I go.
Critics welcome, supporters appreciated. I am NO professional, but I like to have fun with what I do. If you see something wrong, let me know, if you see something right, let me know. If you just want to complain, let me know. I only work on my bike with free time, as I have other projects and work and a little thing called life.
Over the summer I traded off my 01 YZ125 that was highly modified for a 01 articat 400. I soon realized that I was so f***** on the deal that I started to look for someone who wanted a 4 wheeler. Came across a 91 CBR 600 F2.
Clear numbers, no title, 5 PO's. Not too bad. Converted back in 95 for track use only. I was and still am willing to get this baby back on the streets. I have seen footage of this bike being clocked at 185 mph on the track, and the PO was very talented. Had a bad wreck on a dirtbike, caused injury to his ankle and he had to give up racing.
There's the background to this bike. Oh I got her from Colorado, then moved to the east coast. Now there's the background of the bike that I am aware of. As for what all the bike has gone through I don't exactly know, I was not there, I only know what I was told. All the PO's were friends and circled the bike through each other before letting someone else have it. This bike has been stripped of just about everything that has no function but to run. From the fairing being fiberglass, to the wiring harnessed being snipped for weight. As they say in racing weight does matter in speed, and tossing a 120 lb guy on this baby and twisting the throttle back can reach some amazing talent.
I did attempt to have it put into a museum, and came close to doing it. But considering I didn't find another bike that I wanted I decided to keep it. When I went back over a month later to pick up my bike, I noticed after I got home that someone dropped it, HARD. Still had asphalt on it. They had the tail off, said they couldn't find the ignition switch. I informed them that it was a COMPLETE RACE BIKE, which has been raced for 18 years.
Damage - twisted rear tail section slightly.
Damage - bent rear pegs back and in towards the bike, had a chunk of asphalt in the peg itself.
Damage - cracked armor plating, badly gouged.
Damage - bent steering dampener.
Damage - bent handle, bent clutch lever, gouged bar end.
Damage - gouged fairing, can't re-paint due to being custom tinted to owner. (Looks like a pearl black with a red tint to it in the sun)

After this is where I started to rebuild the bike, slowly. Here lately I have been waiting on getting parts in. But due to the weather, they have been slowed down. Most of the parts I bought were off of ebay, why because I have really good luck with it, parts aren't really expensive, and I don't mind slightly damaged worn items. It's an old bike, I am not going to pay $300 for a part that I can get for $50. I'll be throwing in prices of what I paid for items to show more or less what my project is costing or total cost. Whole goal is less than 2 grand for entire build, to include anything in the future that I may want to do to the bike. IE like 5+ years down the road.
I took off the gauge cluster that I had.
Previous gauge cluster.
Tore it apart to see what all I needed or if I just needed to replace the entire thing. Well it anything I could just use it as parts.
Just the back side, didn't take pics of the inside.
So I bought another used gauge cluster.
New to me, but used gauge cluster. Cost around $50 shipped.
I started to take the new one apart to see if there was anything major that I could not use, or what I could use.
Again just the backside.
I decided to keep my housing, considering mine wasn't busted and cracked as bad. So I swapped over the gauges, Temp, Tach, and Speedo. To include the left turn lens, and entire clear cover lens. Installed back onto the fairing stay. Then started to wire it back up to check for any issues.
Pretty simple wiring. Plug it up, and match the holes in the fairing stay with the correct plugs.
Still waiting for my left hand controls to get here. So this is where those will plug into.
I didn't have any way to keep my bike from being stolen after I get up and running on the streets. So I bought an ignition switch. Pretty cool one I think. Instead of the straight flat keys that tend to break in the fuel tanks, I got a round key set. I had to drill out the fuel cap anyways. With replacing it, I don't need it to match the fuel cap.
Key set I got. Can't stab a screw driver into this one. $33 shipped.
Fuel cap I went with. Fixed permanently any possible issues with being able to snap the key off in the cylinder trying to get the cap off. $27 shipped.
Bought a speedo cable. Perfect fit. $5 shipped.
When I got this bike there was no kick stand. So I bought another one. After installing it. I think that I should of gotten an adjustable one. This one seems to be shorter than I expected the bike to need. $18 shipped.
Had a battery, but that was completely shot. Was out of water/acid for too long. So I got a new TMS gel battery. Used them before and never had any issues out of them. Plus the one for the 1000rr is 1,000 CCA, compared to the 600 CCA for the 600rr, I need the extra power to kick this motor over. $35 shipped.
Installed, it is about a 1/2" shorter than stock size, so being about to remove the battery is a lot easier.
Added a rear brake light switch, custom made spring. Re-used a spring off of a dirt bike motor to fit onto the rear brake switch. $12.50 shipped.
Also bought a headlight for the bike. $85 shipped.
Compared to the one I had laying around and fitted to the bike, I think I'll figure a way to mount the stock headlight to the fairing stay.
I already swapped out the old wiring harness on the bike that was stripped of everything that I need to be street legal. With a fairly decent used one for around $35 shipped.
Also bought some other items, but I'll post about those when I get to adding them on, and when they decide to get delivered.
Currently working on fitting a seat to the bike. I bought this seat being told that it was for a F2, but I highly doubt it as it didn't even come close. But after sitting on it, and putting it up to the bike, I like the way it is gapped for the fuel tank, like the way it hugs my legs when I sit on it, and I already bought it. So now I am making it fit.
Seat I ordered.
Seat on the bike, looking, and thinking if I should do what I am thinking.
So close to just sliding under the lip. Yeah custom work needed.
So close to fitting.
But this is in the way.
The bar previous installed so the tail section would have support and a way to bolt to the bike. So off this bracket must go.
Cut-off wheel on a dremel and a grinder, made smooth work.
Started chopping the bottom of the seat to fit the tail section of the bike.
Re-used some tabs I chopped off earlier to help the secure the front of the seat.
Another view of the seat. Still incomplete, and in progress.
So much more to do. But slowly working on her as I get time. I don't mind custom work, I'll be the one riding her and looking at her. If y'all get the chance you can look at my photo bucket to see more photos that I may or may not post here. Here I will describe what it is or being done. There I do not. Plus you can also see my last bike project. ZX9R. Complete ground up build. Bored out to a 954cc, port and polished heads, custom intake, custom paint, HID kit, LED lighting kit, Python Alarm, Double Bubble windshield, Custom hand grips, Blinking mirrors, Custom gel seat, and I hand polished the frame. Took 2 weeks with 3-4 hours every day and over 10 hours on Saturday and Sunday. Traded her off for a truck to use for work. The guy totaled her out within a week, T-boned a car.
I'll update probably later on today. I know theses post are long, but it's easier to just post in sections then snippets. Hope y'all enjoy.

Welcome to the forum, jokersace, and good luck with the rebuild... as I mentioned to mrmc, you'll find lots of ideas and inspiration in this forum, and getting a manual for the bike is a must!
Are you going fully-faired, or doing a streetfighter build?
One thing I will mention though, is that if that is an F2 engine in there, it would take MAJOR engine work, and I mean MAJOR engine work, for you to see 165 on one of these bikes, let alone 185.
There weren't any pics of the engine there, so that we can see if it is indeed an F2 motor or not, but whatever someone told you/showed you about this machine doing 185, is completely bogus, if it is a 600cc F2 engine... 185 is faster than what can be achieved by many 1000cc sportbikes out there!
Anyway, good luck with the work, and there's not problem putting lots of pictures here, so keep your thread loaded with pictures as you go! You'll lose people if you have them going to your photobucket page to see the pictures.

JnsRacing, Yeah i know that having a 600 go that fast is hard. But the video I seen of the bike racing was this bike indeed. It is possible that the radar at the track was wrong. but that's the number that popped up. I went 205 on ZX9R, but that had major work, and wide open throttle on a very very very long straight road slightly down hill. Highway 285, I mean speedway 285, in New Mexico is just a long straight black river. I also had an 08 ZX6R that topped out at 172. That was pretty much stock, except for tires and a experienced rider.
This bike will go back to full fairing. I don't really care for naked bikes that much. And I don't know what was or if anything was done to the inside of this motor. It has been raced for over 18 years, so I can only go by what they PO's told me. Unless I break into the motor, and well it runs and rides just great, so no need to right at the moment. Wish I knew of a dyno shop around me to see what number it can lay down.

Well with today being so nice out and no work going on. I started to put some more time into my bike. I feel as if I got a lot done with it today.
Needed to cut the tail section to fit the seat.
Before.
After.
Then needed to mock up the seat to see how it looked sitting on the bike. I think that I will like it quite a bit over stock and over what was there, which was foam.
I know that there is more that I'll need to do to it. But for the time being until I come up with a way to secure the seat down. This will do.
After getting the seat semi done. I moved to the headlight. Considering I need to see what the fairings look like on the bike before I can completely finish the tail.
I needed to cut a hole in the front nose piece to accept the headlight. Easy to start with a hole smaller than what is needed so you can make it bigger as you go.
Before.
General size, didn't need it to be perfect, just round about.
After several test fits, it fits pretty well.
Started to take off the stickers to sand down the fairings to see where and what all is damaged this way I can repair it before it is complete. Rough sanded one to see what the big difference is, found a bunch of small cracks throughout the fairings.
Still have yet to decide on a paint scheme or color. So for the time being, I'll just do matte black after I repair the fairings and make them a tad bit sturdier where needed.
As the day started to feather away, mail showed up and got another box. Left control switch came in.
Not too bad for a small days work. I'll keep the pics coming when I get more work done on her. Til then, let me know what y'all think.
