knocking during acceleration

ok, im experiencing some knocking/pinging during acceleration. ive searched some forums but everything i keep seeing over and over again is use a higher octane fuel. but im already using 91.oct and i cant find a gas station with anything higher then that.

so im kinda starting to think its not my fuel, and i saw a reply in one thread that maybe its a cct but its not a cct noise like marbles in a can...its as if thier is a little man hanging out in my engine knocking a wooden mallet against the piston walls. tock (half second interval) tock and so forth untill i hit about 4k rpm. then it either goes away or i just cant hear it over the sound of my two brothers.

i want to fix it. -.-

RE: knocking during acceleration

Try a bottle of that octane boost additive they sell in auto stores. Careful, whole bottle is probably made for a 15-20 gallon tank, so use accordingly. See if that stops the knocking. If it works, start looking again for higher octane fuel.If not, time to crack open the service manual to the troubleshooting page.

Let us know.

RE: knocking during acceleration

ill try and find some of that stuff.

the book says spark plug carbon build up or wrong heat range.

good thing i bought 4 brand new plugs today.....:D

just have to wait on the wrench to come in the mail, my socket set wont fit in there

RE: knocking during acceleration

hopefully not piston slap

RE: knocking during acceleration

According to the instructions you run with the right octane, as I am aware of.

Changing to another type of spark plugs depending on your carb. adjustment could help. What is the color of your spark plugs?

When I changed my clutch and springs, I have experienced less motor vibrations/noise which could be the cause for your "sound" problems.

Just my 2 cent on this one.....

RE: knocking during acceleration

i dont think its loud enought o be piston slap, my neighbor said those are pretty loud, havent heard one myself to be honest.

and i noticed today while riding around that it only does it when i accelerate hard, not as in HARD but normal. when i acclerate slowly and go through the gears every 15mph or so it doesnt do it

anybody got anything? anything!

RE: knocking during acceleration

When you get your spark plug wrench, double check the gap settings on each. The gap setting for each should be between .8 and .9 mm. Since you already have a new set, get those to the correct gap setting ahead of time in case you need to change them.

Octane boost didn't help?

RE: knocking during acceleration

You may want to take a look at your cam chain tensor. Which reminds me that I need to change mine.

RE: knocking during acceleration

Also when putting in the new spark plugs, I would also check/chang your cam tensior if necassary like hoosier said. On top of that..id get some high octane fuel..and get some of those gas drops they advertise on here...it basically changes it to race gas...they also have some oil additive...id change your oil and use that stuff as well.

RE: knocking during acceleration

Octane boost won't do much.

Seafoam is the stuff to use to clear out your combustion chamber.

tao_victim 02-08-2008 05:47 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

yeah i put in the octane boost and it didnt help. ive heard alot of stuff about seafoam, maybe ill try that aswell. the plugs i got are honda oem so they are already pre gapped 9's aswell, just have to wait for my wrench before i can rule them out as a problem.

the bike only has 14k miles on it, dont the ccts usually go out around 20k? the only thing stopping me from getting a new cct is the fact that i only have 50 bux left on my creditcard before i max, and i need gas too or none of this even matters, haha.

anyone happen to have a spare one laying around that i can pay shipping for, or maybe swap you a part? :)

RE: knocking during acceleration

oh, and the oil is brandnew synthetic, i dont want to replace that quite yet. itll just be another 40bux down the tube

RE: knocking during acceleration

Well dude, here's the troubleshooting knocking part of the service manual:

Hope this helps

RE: knocking during acceleration

i didnt see any metal flakes in my last oil change, so does that rule out worn piston and cylinder?
how would i go about making my mixture less lean?
the fuel qaulity is not it.
carbon build up, i bought some sea foam, thatll rule that out right?
ignition timing, ill open it up and make sure the timing is on the f mark.

and with the seafoam, is it ok if i mix it with octane booster?

i just filled up and put in the octane booster, so im curious if i need to drain the tank first then fill up and put in sea foam

tao_victim 02-08-2008 09:36 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

ok, new fuel, but this time i used seafoam. i put about 4.5oz should seem resonable? let her idle for a bit then took her for a quick ride around downtown to feel for any changes and inspect the noise some more. the knocking didnt go away, but i noticed that it only knocks when the bike is pulling wieght, i read on a forum some where that if your chain is too tight itll do that. anyone else heard of this?

reydelaplaya 02-08-2008 10:17 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

Is it possible something happened in your recent wreck? Did it bang the bike around a bit?

tao_victim 02-08-2008 10:45 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

i high sided on my right, smashed the mirror and snapped off the brake lever, etc.

but i just went out and checked and my chain is tight, way too tight. so tomorrow it looks like im waking up rise and shine and heading to home depot to get a socket for the rear axle nut. any of you guys happen to know the mm of the socket?

reydelaplaya 02-09-2008 12:24 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

Did that fix it?

tao_victim 02-09-2008 07:49 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

it sure did, im stoked.

that was bugging the hell out of me

Cool!!;)

RE: knocking during acceleration

glad you got it going:D

tao_victim 02-10-2008 08:36 AM

RE: knocking during acceleration

ugh, i lied. it came back. when ever it ticks i can feel it in my footpegs and it gets faster with speed, only happens in my 1-3 gears. it used to do it in all of them then i loosend my chain it went away all together. then i went 100 on the free way, and it came back again. maybe its a tranny problem?

reydelaplaya 02-10-2008 09:27 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

Now it kinda sounds like a bearing or gear going bad.

rider0033 02-11-2008 12:12 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

you should throw your bike up on the rear stand and see if you dont have a kink or tight spot in your chain. might be time for a new one! just throw it up and turn the wheel by hand and you'll be able to tell if there is one or not by the way it rotates. how tight was the chain before you loosened it?

tao_victim 02-12-2008 02:24 AM

RE: knocking during acceleration

tight, lucky if it moved a centimeter. the rear axle nut must not have been on to tourqe specs. i got it set now though.

i also need to get a stand, i dont have one. where do i get them for cheeeeap? i need to replace my front rotors anyways

rider0033 02-12-2008 12:29 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

well for the front rotors you can grab a jack and place it near the right side/bottom of the engine. besure your kick stand is down of course. when you start jacking it up the bike will rest on the kick stand and the back tire. you dont need to raise it that far and dont leave it unattended if you have kids

tao_victim 02-12-2008 08:13 PM

RE: knocking during acceleration

oh sweet ill grab my moms jack out of her car tomorrow, and no kids for me. only 19. haha

i hope i dont got a kink in the chain, thatd blow right about now on my budget

tao_victim 02-13-2008 12:32 AM

RE: knocking during acceleration

ive done a bunch of research and turns out im just going to replace my chain sprockets. its about that time anyway.

ill let you guys know if this fixes it
