help needed removing lower race
Hey People
I'm looking for some advice I'm looking at replacing the headstock bearings and bearing races. Now I've had no problem removing the top bearing /race and bottom bearing but I'm having trouble with removing the bottom race from the steering stem I've try knocking it off with a flat blade screw drive and hammer but still cant get it to move so I'm looking for advice on any over way to remove it I've thought about heating it up then taping it off but that to be my last resort |
You might try a little break-free on it, but really, driving it out by chasing around the
edge, is about the only thing I know of. It's ok to shred the old race, just be careful of damaging the seat in the head-stock. If it does get nicked up, be sure to polish it smooth before installing the new one. When you get ready to seat the new ones, I use a piece of 1/2" to 3/4" all-thread, with a nut and large washer on each end. Thread it through and then tightening it up will pull the new bearings in squarely. Good luck, Ern |
I had to heat mine up with a torch a lil to help it off.

Homedepot, Lowes, or a commercial construction/electrical supply house
are your best starting points to look. The 1/2" is easy, most places should carry it. The 3/4" is where you'll have to start really working the phone/search engine. I've had mine so long, I don't recall where I picked it up. I might have even snagged it as scrap off a job-site, since I do commercial construction for a living and you trip over the stuff out there. ;-) Ern |
My friend came up with a brilliant idea for removing the lower race. He took a piece of metal conduit, smashed one end of it flat and then curved the edges up. We put this down. This allowed for two contact points on the lower race and then smacked it out with hammer. A screw driver only allowed for one contact point and kept slipping off. Hopefully my explanation makes sense.
