electrical gremlin

So I thought all was well with the bike, took her out for a ride today and she just shut off.

No power at all. No lights, no gauges, nothing. Checked the main fuse, blown. Replaced it and she started up again.

One mile down the rode, died again. No lights, no power, nothing. Checked all fuses, none blown!

Any ideas?

The main connector after the positive is corroded?

nor_cal_cbr 03-09-2009 10:06 AM

Is your positive wire to your battery grounding out on the frame? If it doesnt have that little rubber boot on it there's a good chance if you leaned or hit a bump the terminal could ground out....

good luck...

just got the bike home today. will take a look at both. thanks! any more info will be greatly beneficial.

gregtutch 03-10-2009 01:32 PM

my bike done exactly the same thing. a new regulater/rectifier and new battery later and all was good again.

g32bturbo 03-10-2009 09:24 PM

Ok, here's what i've come up with. Battery is fine. All connections going to and from the battery are fine and not touching the frame or anything.

How likely is it the starter relay is bad? Would that cause the bike to just shut off or does that only have to deal with actually starting the bike?

Also, another thing worth mentioning. The emergency Run/Off switch hasn't worked on the bike since I've gotten it. Could that be the problem?

I'm really baffled at what the problem could be. It's like someone took the key out or disconnected the battery; absolutely nothing comes on (except the temp gauge).

Sand.Man 03-11-2009 12:25 AM

Starter relay is only engaged when using the starter, I would look into the kill switch but that may not solve the problem... The lights should still work with the key "on" and the killswitch "off".

g32bturbo 03-11-2009 01:27 PM

Thanks Hershey, that's what I figured. So here I am at step one again. Where should I start? Perhaps the ignition switch, where I put the key in, is busted? Also, I'll take a look at the kill switch and report back. Thanks for the help guys.

DRLOWZ 03-11-2009 03:59 PM

Sounds like that bike needs some new parts..

g32bturbo 03-11-2009 04:28 PM

sounds like this bike is about to be sold.

DRLOWZ 03-12-2009 12:06 AM

Where ya located?

i think my battery is straight up dead. i measured the volts.. less than 1volt. what would cause it to just die like that? also can someone do me a favor and measure resistance across the positive and negative leads for the battery (without the battery connected). thanks for the help thus far.

DRLOWZ 03-13-2009 12:52 PM

These batteries do just go bad like that...Get you a new one and if possible dont get the one from wal mart. Get a good one.. Good luck and keep me posted..

g32bturbo 03-15-2009 09:24 PM

so can anyone measure continuity across the battery leads for me?

g32bturbo 03-16-2009 04:32 PM

bump plz

g32bturbo 03-17-2009 04:07 PM

someone? anyone? it's supposed to be warm tomorrow and i need to ride! :-)

DRLOWZ 03-17-2009 04:20 PM

Did you get a new battery?

g32bturbo 03-17-2009 05:00 PM

yes, though i haven't put it in yet. I'm still at work. I'll let you know what happens.

g32bturbo 03-18-2009 12:30 PM

alrighty, here's an update. I took the battery to get it tested and recharged. Charged it back up and put it on with 12.72 volts. THE BIKE STARTED UP! I took it for a test ride. Got about 2 miles away, turned it off and now it won't turn back on. The main fuse blew again. Do I have a short somewhere? Where should I start lookin? How likely is it that the stator is messed up?

BustedF2 03-18-2009 01:10 PM

this sounds like what happened to me when my R/R went bad. I was accelerating hard in first, hit second, back on the throttle and nothing. Bike was dead. I pulled over, checked the kill switch and the key. Nothing. the bike had no power, so I checked the fuse. Sure enough it was blow. I put in another fuse and it blew instantly. So I got the bike home and began looking around, I notice the harness to the R/R was melted. So I bought another R/R and fixed the harness, and no problems since. BTW, I have heard that the R/R going bad can destroy a battery, so that could be your battery problem.

g32bturbo 03-18-2009 04:09 PM

good info. i've got an RR on order right now. I'll let you guys know what happens.

g32bturbo 03-21-2009 06:35 PM

bustedf2 hit the nail right on the nose as far as i can tell. i threw in another R/R, changed the main fuse, and bam, started up. no problems thus far. an interesting note: the R/R tested bad with the volt meter and when I took it off, it looked like it was leaking or something. Anyway, I'll keep you all updated. Thanks for the help!
