A while back I put a can of Sea Foam into my tank, thinking I could solve my high idle problems without having to break the carbs down, and a few weeks later (no riding), I couldn't start the engine... I added some gas too it and I got it started.

Then the next day it wouldn't start. Seemed to be flooding because it was popping out the exhaust... I pulled the plugs and they were a bit wet.

Long story short, I got it running again (after like 2-3 days of trying), and now I've got very, very poor response and the power of about a 50cc scooter. It also wants to die if I let it idle at 2000 or so (or just does).

What can cause it to go so rich? The cold weather, cold plugs? Timing way the hell off?

It ran very well months ago (albeit it idled about 2,500).

The tank is full of 87 (PON, which is like 91 RON, which the bike calls for).

Also, it has a K&N filter, D&D pipe (yeah, yeah... loud) and I think the jets are stock, but this was never a problem in mild weather.

I wonder how I can check the timing it it won't idle well at less than 2,500 RPMs.

 

Weather does Affect jetting in everyway..Temp. altitude,Different exhaust,Air filter moding..But it seems to me that you just need new plugs..I'd go and buy a set of plugs and go from there But your saying its got very poor response and the power of about a 50cc which indicates that your not running on all 4 cylinders..So Get some plugs man

 

Your carbs are probably dirty from sitting all those weeks. The F2 petcock is vacuum actuated so when the bike's off there's no fuel in the carbs and it ends up evaporated and gumming up your jets. You're definitely gonna have to get your hands dirty on this one and clean the carbs/jets with some fine wire/carb cleaner/compressed air. I wouldn't replace the plugs just yet unless they're really black(porcelain part). Most of the time you can just clean it with carb cleaner and put them back in. Once you get everything cleaned up and are ready to start it up make sure you have it on full choke, start it up, then let it idle about 40 seconds/1min then start easing the choke lever back up otherwise you'll flood the plugs again.

 

If your plugs have a dry sooty black to them, you may be able to clean them, but if they are WET, don't waste your time trying to clean them, just go ahead and replace them, but beware, unless your repair what ever caused them to foul, you may get sucked into a vicious circle. Sounds like it's time for a thorough carb cleaning. [8D]

 

Well it runs like a 50 CC at full throttle... lol

It revs freely in neutral (although I can tell from the sound that it's too rich), although with a slightly delay, but it won't pull hard when I'm in gear.

The plugs were basically OK... just wet, so I cleaned them and burnt the fuel off with a blowtorch.

Also, my petcock isn't vacuum activated so there would have probably been fuel in them the whole time. I may have forgotten to turn it off, flooding the carbs though.

 

you need to pull your carburetors, clean them out thoroughly and make sure your pilot jets arent clogged, along with every other passage you see being cleared too.

 

If the plugs were wet, you're pissin in the wind trying to clean them, your blowtorch isn't gonna make anywhere near the heat to burn off the residue that the combustion process does. [8D]

 

i'd go with everyone else, clean those carbs. its really not hard to do and you'll be saving yourself a lot of headache.

 

new plugs. been there done that. wasted alot of time trying to keep cleaning them

 

IS there no 'idle speed' adjustment **** on the f2 as there is on the f3?
