Default clutch question

my clutch is slipping and ive adjusted everythig six ways from sunday

it engages smooth from a stop but at higher rpms and quick shifts it slips up

im gonna take off the case cover this weekend for the first time to look at it

what should i look for as far as how a normal operating clutch should look like and act like?

some people have said they only see some of the plates move when the clutch is disengaged

and springs, could i install just the springs to freshen up the clutch

im pretty sure theres some other symptoms i forgot but ill remember

Remove the plates and organize them so they go back in the same order they came out.

Check the steel plates for discoloration and warpage by laying them on a flat surface.

Check the fiber plates to see how far down they are worn, if you cannot see the raised squares on the fibers they have worn out - also check these for warpage.

New springs is not usually necessary, but you can get stiffer springs if your clutch takes a lot of abuse.

EBC sells a "racing clutch" kit for about $85 with stiffer springs, I use this kit on my bike.

Some people say they only see some of the plates move when the clutch is disengaged because the plates stick together from the vacuum created between the plates by the oil.

I suggest the EBC kit for a new clutch.

If your cable is adjusted properly and the 3-4mm is just freeplay then yeah that's fine, but if it is holding the clutch back at all that might be where your slippage is coming from.

Maybe I'm stating the obvious here, but maybe a place to start would be to replace the throttle cable. But its still probably not a bad idea to take a look at the clutch, see how compressed the springs are and what the discs and fibers look like.

haha, oh man. I did not realize I typed that until looking back on this thread. hahaha

But the fact remains, I stand by my previous statement. A new throttle cable will have a profound impact on your clutch.

Throttle cable elmer?
haha maybe I should check my tire pressure too

just kidding

what I mean about the return spring not bringing the arm all the way back
is like if I back out the jam nut andbasically put a bunch of slack in
the cable the spring still wont bring the arm back all the way back. i can
move the arm back 3 or 4mm by hand until i feel a dead stop

Elmer mentioned seeing how compressed the springs inside the clutch are
is there a measurement or how can I determine what they should look like?

The clutch spring bolts should be tightened all the way, there's no setting for those.

But the return spring might be fully relaxed before it reaches the full travel of the arm
