I want to say you have some type of "vapor lock"....but don't know if that still exists past 1982.

Check your fuel lines and any venting hoses from the tank..first...

It's a fuel delivery problem for sure...

Problem is somewhere between your tank's petcock and the carbs...

+1 I had a very similar problem and it ended up being a crimped vent hose. Check your vacuum and vent lines - especially when you squash the tank down.

Could be a fuel problem, but I think it's your coil getting too hot. This is caused by broken windings inside the coil, causing excessive resistance. Eventually it builds up and can't create a spark. Check out the resistance (ohms) within the primary and secondary sides of the coil. If you do a search on here or google, I'm sure you'll find a good step-by-step.

If it is a fuel problem, if you pop the gas tank open it should relieve any vacuum buildup and the bike should start.

I'd tend to think it's possible that you have an ignition problem as outlined above. Do the checks shown in the service manual.
