Battery died... rr smoking... stuck at work... help!
ok so I was riding into work this morning when I was making my exit off the freeway near work, I felt the bike hesitate when I was rolling on through the turn. Thought it was nothing and continued on. Got to a slooow turn and dropped throttle... dead! No lights, nothing! just the temp gauge was working.
On lunch I got a new battery from the shop and put her in. she fired up! But... I revved it cause it was idling low at 1k rpm and what do you know... white smoke comes out of the RR. I touched the RR and it felt cool...
I got a 40 mile trip ahead of me through the most treacherous highways known to man! If she dies I very well may too
I know I will probably need a new RR now... tell me its something stupid like I need grease on the terminal screws or something (I didnt put it on there, should I?)
Other than that... I have AAA and they can tow me home but damn... id rather not have to sit through 2 + hrs of traffic in a cage
advice?

That sucks, sorry to hear. As for AAA, I'd be surprised if they'll cover the tow on your bike. Here in FL, I would have to have RV coverage to cover my bikes. Standard or even Plus doesn't cover the bike.
Without a good R/R, you bike will most likely not make it the 40 miles home, even with a good battery. Any friends with trailers ?

ok I was messing with it and the bike started when the RR was disconnected... is this safe? It semed to idle just fine. What risks am I running by riding it home like this?
edit: I got the AAA motorcycle coverage for an extra $7 / month... tow me 140 miles they say... looks like ill be riding with ol scruffy tonight.
so what are the thoughts in the crowd? It smells to me like a busted cap but I honestly am not sure... something electrical burning.
