I honestly don't know... good question.

I'll try burning my hand later today, and I'll report back to what degree it burned.

Aww dude I was just playing!

I really, truly have no idea how hot it gets. Not a clue at all. I never checked as everything else appears to be largely in perfect working order (although I need to adjust my manual CCT). I will be checking now though so you have an answer, and I promise to try my best not to burn myself

The alternator cover will be very close to the water temp read on your gauge. Aluminum is a great thermal conductor and the cases are in contact with the hot engine oil and are well less than 1/2" thick. I wouldn't be surprised if it got to 190F during hard riding.

It will be VERY hot at normal operating temp. I sometimes put my hand on the cover to use as a judge of how warm the engine has gotten when warming it up for the first ride of the day. Then you figure it's metal that's attatched to the engine. Heat is going to be transferred easily to that part of the engine. So yes, it is normal for it to be hot. Enough to cause serious burns.
