Default Acceleration vs. Top Speed

hey im looking to get some cheap performance from my bike. i hear a gear change can really improve the acceleration but i was wondering what it would do to the top end. i also don't want to be running the bike at 8k rpms doing highway speeds either. does anyone have any preference??? do you think i would be able to beat a 2000 r6 with this upgrade?? im trying to beat my roomate lol

I went up just two teeth in the rear for a little extra pickup. It added some gusto to the bike, without killing the top end. I peak around 135mph and am generally at 6k at highway speed (~70mph).

jnicola,

Did you keep the stock size chain (108 links)? Or did you have to get a longer chain?

acceleration is always preferred to top speed because unless you plan on tracking or topspeed test, then you shouldnt be going that high in speed

is there some conversion kit i could buy?? does it cost the same as a regular replacement? are our bikes limited to their gearing or horsepower??? and most importantly will it beat a stock 2000 r6 lol?

When I went up two teeth in the rear sprocket I also got a brand new chain. The shop I went to had a huge special on some 520 chain they got for next to nothing, but it was in shorter segments than nescessary for most applications. The simply riveted two together and viola, it didn't even matter that it was too short, as it was now too long and they could cut down to the right length and so on and so fourth.

Two teeth up is nice as it doesn't eat much into fuel economy, delivers additional performance, and doesn't kill top speed. I beleive it's a slightly better gearing for the bike.

Out of curiosity, what brand sprockets did you go with?

Uncertain. A good friend of mine works at a shop here in PDX and he helped me slap it on, it was his recommendation to make the small jump up. I ride on sthe street primarily, and the top speed of the bike wasn't doing me any good. I do however commute, so going too far up would deliver less than desirable milage results.
