94 CBR: Fixing the Ole' Girl
 

Well its been a while since I posted but i finally gotta chance to start working on the ole' girl. Schools out for a few weeks and decided i better dive in. (PICS will come after i get off work). I've decided to document my "rebuild". Im going to say I rescued her from the P.O. She was pretty beat up and abused.

1994 cbr 600 f2, ill check mileage when i get home.

Well I started with a new battery. P.O told me it wasnt turning on. And he just let it sit outside cause he didnt know what to do. Stuck the key in and NOTHING!!!!

Next step was the fuse. Got the fuse tester and found out the 30 amp fuse was dead...put in a new fuse..took a swig of beer and put the key in...WE GOT LIGHTS!!! Woohoo..added some oil because i noticed an oil leak at the stator case. took another swig of beer and turned the key. Sure enough it started right up.

After a few minutes of letting her run, there was a hint of gas and and smoke coming from the front. Upon closer examination, I sound the problem. The oil was burning pretty bad. The JB WELD the attempted to fix the leak with didnt hold up to well. I wish i woulda got a picture of this abuse. Just a 1/2 inch of JB WELD. I guess that $5 gasket for the stator case was just to much. This guy JB Welded EVERYTHING even some of the BOLTS. High 5 to him.

Well after several hours of chiselling away JB Weld and finally getting all the bolts taken out. I got the stator case taken off and waiting for gasket to put on. and a new BOLT..

Also I noticed there is this canister under my bike. found out that the bike is Cali version. Got the emissions crap. I was wondering should i take that off. Considering Im in Illinois.
Is there any advanatage or disadvantage to removing or keeping it? i read up on how to remove it..it seems whether intensive. welding aluminum to the head, etc, etc. havent been able to locate a way to just rip the stuff out and plug it. and how would that effect performance.

You can pull the smog stuff quite easily. The main item to plug is the central spider block under the air box. The vent hoses from the carbs are left open to the atmo. The hoses from the tank, the same. You wind up with a vac line to the petcock. The rest is stored in a box in case you ever need it. The manual has a picture of the hose routing, but there are a few errors in my 91 manual that I corrected.

The evap system basically takes all the vents to a holding tank under the bike and then when the bike runs, the vac valves allow the tank to release its vapors into the carbs to be burned off.

JB Weld...... pfft, rookie, he should have used duct tape.



It sucks having to fix someone else's mistakes, doesn't it? I would absolutely get rid of the emissions crap. Anything else that a motorcycle doesn't need should be eliminated. It makes the bike easier to work on. Also, it's less that can go wrong. Those systems can cause all sort of running issues.

Okay thank you for the reply. Yeah that should be easy enough to remove and plug the appropiate hoses.

Yeah its a project, ill just take my time and get it done...

Oh that poor bike!! Needs lots of love man. I like working on mine although it's been quite a while. Lol!!
