With the on and off gas switch on my bike which way is on and which way is off?

Up=Reserve
Middle=Off
Down=On

Do yourself a favor since im guessing you just got the bike. BUY THE MANUAL!

Ok i had my bike started ab out a month ago, tried starting it agian yesterday, it turns over and turns over and it will attempt to start but then it wont. every now and then it will back fire really loud.. the battery is dead so i hooked a battery charger up to it.. can anyone help me?

 

We would need more info than that to help diagnose.
Are you sure the bike is getting air + fuel + spark? maybe since the battery was close to dead there wasn't enough juice to make a decent spark? have you checked the airbox and petcock?
