Default Wrong slip-on?

Hello there.

I own a 88 600 Hurricane which I obtained about 2 weeks ago with 31,000 miles. It runs fairly well and looks very good as its previous owners took good care of it. Now for the question.

The machine runs smooth in all gears up to about 4k which is when it begins to bog down till I reach 5k regardless the amount of throttle. If I ride it through past 5k it picks up quickly and excellerates very well. It I run at a constant 4k in 3rd, I can hear popping out of the exhust which is a Vance & Hines Chrome slip-on. I don't believe the previous owner had the machine re-jetted for the V&H. I pretty shure it is running rich.

I called V&H to see what they would suggest and they said "A Chrome, that belongs on a CB not a CBR". He was going to find out any suggestions from the boss and never got back to me. Is there something I can do to lean the mixture or to increase the back pressure? I am greatfull for any suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

You dont always have to rejet the carbs, but it may be necessary; you may just need to resync them. That does not look like the SS2R either, which is the V&H pipe for the F1. There is not a lot of aftermarket pipe choices which is probably why it was put on there. Also ensure your choke cable is good and not sticking either.

It is not an SS2R for sure. When I sent the photo to V&H they said it is a "Chrome", thats it. I will check the choke (that sounded weard) and let you know what I find. I also am changing the air filter this Monday.
Thanks for the input...

Rrasco, I changed the oil filter with a Uni-Filter with oil. The old filter which was black is a K&N. I plan on cleaning the K&N and replacing ASAP because of the following:
I now need to keep the choke on when first starting the bike when I never needed to prior to changing the filter. I also found out if I keep the choke mid-range, all the loss of power I had between 4-56K is back! With the choke in mid-adjustment the motor runs very smooth at all rpm at all speeds.
This morning I drove to work with the bike with the choke on the setting which makes it run the best. I found out when the bike is cold the standing still idle runs fast (about 2K) and when the bike is hot (DIES!!!). I found that out a couple times at a stop light listening to the eco of horns blasting from behind me. When I return the choke to the off position when hot, it idles like a champ.
What does this mean. Does the choke add fuel or air?

Thanks for the advice!

you may need to take your carbs apart a look at them. mine was acting real sporatic like that and it was because a jet had fallen out after they had been cleaned and not properly put back together. recently, along the same lines someone had a stuck needle. you may need to give them a good ol cleansing and then sync them up. initially i would think your bike was running lean, but just because it heats up should not change the amount of fuel being delivered. when my bike is cold i have to choke it to start, but once its hot, even hours later if it is warm outside, i cant use the choke or it will die.

Thanks for the above reccommendation.

Out of couriosity, when open does the choke on a 88 Cane increase the amount of gas going into the carbs or increase the amount of air?

It lets the carbs run full bore, when the choke is closed it cuts down the amount of air to richen the mix and help the bike warm up quicker.

Ok. I cleaned the carbs which were suprisingly clean to begin with. Knowing that when I ride with the choke positioned at the half-way point the motor runs exelent through all rpm's at all speeds (execpt the fast idle at stops), is making me believe that the Vance & Hines Chorme slip-on is effecting the fuel to air ratio. If I understand correctly, if the choke is on and it runs great, that means there is too much air and or not enough fuel. This would most likely tell me that the prior owner did not rejet.

Is there a simple way to fix this? What if I were to ductape some of the inlet holes ontop of the airfilter cover (just an idea)? This would possibly cut down on the air being supplied to the engine therefore simulating half choke?

Thanks again for your feed back....

Hello again. I happen to be just looking around the top area of the carbs and I saw a small brass tube with a hole next to each carburetor. One of the black boots had an extention that covered one tube, another boot covered another one half way and the other two were not covered at all . I could not find any documentation in the manual or online forums about these small brass tubes. I talked to a co-worker and he though they may be used when the engine is built, to do the initial vacuum setup on each carb. So I took the tank and filter off and stuck a toothpick in each one and took it for a drive.

WOW! Not only did it run better than when I first bought it, it ran exellant through all gears at all rpm's. So I bought a pack of 4 peg-board hooks that had little rubber covers on the ends and covered all 4 tubes as shown in the photographs. I forgot to take a pict prior to putting the caps on and they were very hard to get on (very tight fit) Go figure.....
