So currently our 89 Hurricane (wife's bike) has a 520 chain conversion with a +2 vortex sprocket on the rear. This is the configuration that I'd purchased the bike in. Unfortunately it appears that these rear sprockets are made out of recycled reynold's wrap and is starting to show signs of unusual wear after only 4000 miles.

She mostly uses the bike for sport touring purposes, it will likely never see track and the only time it see's red line is when I ride it. My thought is I'd like to return the bike to stock gearing with a 530 chain.

My question is this, does anyone have any recommendations for a good chain and steel sprocket (front and rear)? I'd like something quality that's going to last, not the cheapest.

And I'm a dummy, I just realized I'd spelled the word "Sprockets" wrong in the thread title....

 

Aluminum 520 sprockets just don't last on sport bikes. I'm going to take my 600f2 up to a 530 just to gain some durability. The best comparison I've heard yet for chain weight was this:

"Hold a 520 chain in your hand and then hold a 530 chain, and try andt ell me that the weight difference there isn't the equivalent of simply taking a **** before you ride"


Anyways, on a more serious note... DID 530 X-ring chain is my advice. Pick up a Super Sprox rear sprocket if you can. Aluminum core, steel teeth. Lasts forever, and still provides acceleration benefits. Any old front sprocket will work, but go vortex if you want name brand!

 

I'm thinking of probably just doing a solid steel on the rear. Let me put it this way, my wife just discovered that the bike makes most of its power above 7k rpm's. I think any weight savings might be lost on her. Now for my 600rr, I might consider the Super Sprox...........

 

Word, a wise choice on the RR. It'll be interesting to see your wife ride now that she knows where the power is hidden. Before she kinda just moseyed along, heh.

 

I am having a hard time finding sprockets.

I went to Supersprox.com and they do not list the 87-90 CBR 600 as a bike they support.

They do the F2-F4, as is typical.

 

I like the Supersprox concept.

I am more than willing to shell out for higher quality design and materials, but Vortex aluminum doesn't seem like a great investment and I would like to stay with 530 durability.

 

I forgot about this thread, I ended up going with Sunstar front and rear sprockets. For the chain I went with an EK x-ring chain. That's all moot now as the Hurricane has now been mothballed in a corner of my garage due to the wife expecting our first child next month.
