Sprocket Change/ Chain change Help?
I have an 89 Cane...Was wondering if anyone new if I can change the Front in rear sprocket to get more power out of my bike... Also do they make a kit for this old of bike including a chain? if not will an F2 chain n sprocket kit fit my F1? Im also not sure how the conversion works, which way is more low end power? which way for more top end? Thanks everyone...

Yes there are sprockets available for both front and rear. Smaller on the front and/or larger on the rear will give you better acceleration with less top speed.
-1 on the front and +2 on the rear will give you a nice improvement without sacrificing too much top speed. Stock sizes are 15 tooth front and 44 rear. I bought mine from cheapcycleparts.com |
Forgot to mention that it's usually a good idea to do chain and sprockets at the same time.

If I did the -1 in front and +2 in rear do i need a different chain size? if so what size? Thanks for the help

No problem.. the stock chain size would be fine as there's enough room in the adjustment slot to compensate for the difference in sprocket size.

Will the chain wear n stretch the same? Or will I need to replace sooner than usual b/c of sprocket differences? Does this even make sense? lol Thanks again

You can get the sprockets and chain off eBay. The brand is JT I believe. They appear to be pretty good but never used one. I plan on doing the -1/+2 set up as soon as I get the funds.

Well I ordered my sprockets from cheapcycleparts.com for a total of around $70 shipped..... Then I ordered an x-chain from EBay for $51.00 shipped..... Hopefully this is a good chain.... Thanks everyone for the help n I will keep ya posted on how everything looks when it shows up...

Is there a certain method to get the front sprocket loose? I have had hellish times from removing the crank pulley on subarus. The bolt doesn't come loose and ends up making the timing belt hop teeth on cam sprockets.
I turned and hard as I could with it in gear and no chain on. It just ended up turning the engine over. I could put the old chain on and that may work, I just don't want to be to forceful... ??? Also is there supposed to be a few mm's of play while its on the shaft? |
I use an impact gun to break it loose.. it can be quite hard to remove especially on these older bikes. If you don't have access to one you can try putting the chain back on and putting the bike in gear while holding the rear brake. It will probably take some force to get it to break loose..
I don't think my sprocket has any play when tight.. is the play in and out towards the engine or in the chain rotating direction? |
