Special Tool? Gimme a break

I'm pulling the motor on an 87 hurricane 600. I need to split the crank case and fix the famous "2nd gear pop out".
The motor is about ready to fall out, I just have to pull the clutch and alternator flywheel before I do the dismount. It appears, however, that I will need some special secret squirrel tool to hold the flywheel while I loosen the nut. Special tool? Dealer Item only? Baahhhh!
Anyone out there actually done this without the tool?

Thanks.

Impact gun ftw! Just put it in gear and be nice. Or make the tool out of some extra steel lying around and weld it up.

I know that works for the clutch center. But that will work for the alternator fly wheel also?

That I'm not sure on, I would think so, but as I have not had reason to pull my flywheel/clutch cage out, I don't know. You could also use a prybar to hold the cage in place while pulling the bolts out.

You should however be able to pull the motor from the frame without even pulling the clutch cover off. Just drop the chain, all the wires, clutch/throttle cables, drain the fluid and the 8 bolts holding her in. And she should drop right out the bottom in one piece.(Super simplified explanation, actually should be about 4-5 hours of work, 1st time doing it)

I think my original post was a bit confusing. My issue is the flywheel that surrounds the stator coils. I don't know if it will come out the same way the clutch center will... I sure hope so.

I don't really want to do all this work... ;) But in order to split the crank case I have to remove both. If I drop the motor before I take out the clutch basket and the alternator flywheel, I'll really be in a pickle, since I'll have no more leverage to de-torque the nuts.

If I knew where my fsm was I would totally walk you through it and post the pics up here. Alas, it is somewhere in the garage in the bike's parts pile. Right next to my car's parts pile.
