SOMEBODY HELP!!! before i sell it
my 87 cane was running the other day and when i goosed it the tach started jumping around like crazy. then it started to die but kept running and then finally totally died. now when i hit the start button nothing happens. the headlight dims to nothing thats it! i had somebody push me and it wont start! so i dont know if its electrical or not. the thing that gets me is it sounds like the starter switch or soleinoid cuz it doesnt even make the clicking noise when i hit the start button. but why wouldnt it run? do i have a short somewhere?

start at the batter first, make sure it is charged, check terminal ends. Make sure you are getting all the power to the starter, try to start it. If It clicks and doesn't start I would think that would be the solenoid/ starter. Also the starter could be hung up on the flywheel if you tried to start her with low voltage, a light tap or too on the main body of the starter will get it unhung if it is infact hung up. If it doesnt start after that you could either, take the starter off and get it tested (not sure how hard it is to get off) or try cleaning the contacts in the switch like someone suggested above. Either way double check all your contact especially those on your battery and starter and that should get you headed in the right direction.

I would say its a loose connection..
When a connection breaks and reconnects it will cause the rev counter to do this.. happened to mine!
Take your fairings and tank off, go over all of the connectors unplugging them - check for corrosion and clean with WD40..
Then if all ok so far.. start the bike up and wiggle all of the wires on the bike one by one.. this should help find a poor contact..
Double check the battery and solenoid wires and connectors especially...
Good luck!
