Default Snapped pressure plate.

After well and truly ****ing up my clutch i decided i'd attempt it myself. Long story short i got the clutch back together and i was tightening the clutch springs. Getting towards the torque setting of 9nm and 3 of the bits where you screw into sheared off the center plate.

The bikes a CBR600FL 1990. Was this due to me doing something wrong or is it just one of those things that happens with an older bike?

Pissed off either way but would like to know if someone thinks i made a mistake so i dont do it next time!

Cheers.

Um.....where exactley did you get the torque spec? The only thing in the clutch that needs to be torqued is the CENTER nut that goes on the retaining shaft. It gets torqued to 9kgf or 65 lbf. The bolts with the clutch springs do not need to be torqued, just snugged up gradually ina diagonal sequence like you would your car tire.

There isn't a torque spec for them, if you have to strain to tighten them with a standard 3/8 drive ratchet, they are plenty tight. The springs will not let them back out.

When I did my clutch I just tightened them down until they bottomed out and wouldn't go any further, which looked like it put everything back where it came from correctly, and I haven't had problems since.

Did you progressively tighten all the bolts in a diagonal pattern? If you tried to just put one all the way in without working the others with it that could have put some strain ont he plate and broken it.

i was doing 5 movement of the rachet which is a 1/4" drive between each one on diagonals. Was that too much in one go?

Hashen, I know this is an old post but I also broke off a stem to my clutch pressure plate tonight although I did it trying to get the center nut off a poor man's way. Were you able to dig up another pressure plate? How much it run you?
