Run out of fuel?
On the way back from work today my bike felt like it was running out of fuel, stuttering and finally dying. I switched to reserve and got about half a mile further before it died and refused to start. Am I out of fuel or could this be the pump or something else?
I,ve only had the bike 2 weeks so am unfamiliar with it. 1988 cbr600f 46.000 miles was running fine until now. any assistance greatly appreciated people. Cheers. |
First step.. Fill it up w/ gas & see if it starts.
No start...troubleshoot... Bad fuel filter? Bad fuel pump? Etc etc etc. Do you have a factory service manual? |
The petcock may be plugged up. If it starts with more fuel in it, you found your problem.

Thanks
Yeah I,ve got a manual, just have to put some gas in it tomorrow and see what happens. I had an xt600 once that would run out even though you could pull the pipe off the tap and find fuel coming out it wouldn,t run 'till you put 5-6 more litres in. Apreciate the advice guys. Take it easy.:icon_toast:

Happens to everyone, once.

The one time I ran out of fuel was on the highway on a very small shoulder with big rigs driving by a few feet away.. not a fun situation & definitely will not happen again :D

The fun part is when you are going down a hill, so you don't notice the lack of fuel, and then you run your carbs dry
|
Bah, when I picked up mine, the carbs were jacked. I was running super rich and getting about 10 MPG. The day of my license test, I decided to go get some low speed maneuvering practice in. It's early so the gas stations in my town are closed so I'm on my way into the next big town. I get about 2 miles from a gas station, idle shoots sky high and I panicked and lowered my idle at a light. I get another about 100 yards from there and it just dies out, no sputter. I try to get it started again, I start talking to my bike saying I'll never complain about a high idle again, just start. Drain my battery, go over to trying to bump it in a tiny parking lot. Then I check my tank. Bone dry. So I called my buddy who was taking his test that day as well (same session as me). Cops show up in the lot I was sitting in, and I explain what happened to them. They radio back to dispatch to call a tow truck. Just as they finish, my buddy pulls in. Then the cops got to watch me bump my bike in a parking lot filled with gravel. I passed my test though.

My petcock was not working properly on my bike and had the same problem as you where I ran out of gas and my reserve did nothing, took my petcock off and cleaned it out and it works great now.
