New steering stem.

New steering stem.
Hello,
It's absolutely beautiful outside today, I finally got everything sorted out and the bike running awesome, put almost 60 miles on it before I brought it back in to check and make sure everything was still looking alright and torqued down, etc. The steering stem felt a little loose under hard braking, so I figured I'd tighten it down a bit. My Clymer manual says ~75 ft-lb for the top stem nut, and I previously torqued it to 65 (for fear of stripping) but it still felt a little loose. So I start to torque it to ~75 ft-lb, and not even 1/6th of a turn through and every thread on the stem stripped out. Go figure.
So my question:
Will an F2 stem fit on an '87 Hurricane 600?
Or, anyone have a lower triple/stem for sale?
The last beautiful warm week of summer and I thought I'd get to ride, and now it's all gone.
Thanks,
-Matt

RE: New steering stem.
the f2/f3 stem will fit but you will have to find away to press it out of the triple clamp. can't use the clamp because the fork tubes for the f2/f3 are larger diameter.
i would try to at least find a 87-90 triple from ebay first.
here, check this out?

RE: New steering stem.
Bummer that the thread stripped.Your description doesn't make it clear that you adjusted the adjusting nut (under the top bridge) first (just thinking youmight behuman -the adjustment for the steering head looseness is the adjusting nut (16ft-lbtorque) and locknut, not the top stem nut). Anyway, might be worth investigating why the top stem nut stripped when you had the right torque on it, so that it doesn't happen again.
