Default New motor wont run!!!

88 Honda Hurricane.
I spun a bearing on my last motor and in stead of splitting the cases. opted for a used motor off ebay.
got the motor in and fired it up, ran for a little while but sounded way off. almost like more of a V-Twin than an inline four. i shut it down and did some more work
replaced spark plugs
cleaned carbs
now im worried my timing may be off or maybe i just hooked up the spark plugs wrong
any ideas???

How about you follow your thoughts and check the timing and spark order?

I would start with the basics like making sure you have spark on all plugs, that you have the firing order correct, battery is good, all connections tight (and correct).

I am not sure how to set the timing (download a manual) but I doubt that somebody is going to bugger around with the timing and then sell the motor.

Sound electrical to me

Timing can be checked but not adjusted.
Yes, download the manual.
