Hey guys im a newbie here! Just picked up a 87 hurricane 600 and everything has been functional for the most part and its ran great! I do have a few questions though..... One is about tire size. I read in the stick some people run up to 170's on the rear.... well my bike has a 110/70/17 on the front and a 170/60/17 on the rear. I need to replace the rear so shoud i just get the same size???? Also on the gas tank on the rear of it there is a nipple which appears to sit over a rubber opening, shoud there be a line on that? Maybe I pulled it off when i removed the tank? Im sure I have more questions but I will start with these and appreciate any help!!!

 

Welcome to the forum. Its a great bike you got. Make sure to post some pics. 170 is really big for the rear on this bike. Stock size is a 130. It must have had something done to be able to fit that. I guess if the bike handles well and it doesn't rub, than it is fine. Get some pics of the tire and the swingarm!

That nipple is an overflow if you overfill the tank. It should go to a little tray which is hooked up to a hose which dumps on the right side of the bike.

The previous owner said it is all stock... As far as I can tell everything is factory except the tire sizes.

 

Looks like a stock rear wheel.. I wouldn't recommend anything wider than a 140-150. The tire on there now is much too wide for the wheel.

 

Hmm.... I would hate to lose any of the superb handling it has by going with a smaller tire.... maybe a 160? On a side note I rode it out tonight about sixty miles and on the way home she died out as i stopped for a light and died again 5 minutes later shifting out of first..... not good.

 

That doesn't look like a 170 to me...still too wide tho. I thought if tire went above 150 the chain would hit the tire.

 

The bike handles great with a smaller tire. Don;t forget these bikes were raced with the stock size rubber back in the 80's. If they can take 130+ mph race speeds, they can take your road going.

I run a 150 rear and its a great size, coming from stock.

Edit: As for your quitting engine problem... going to sound stupid but do you have fuel? I have no idea what your mechanical skills are so I will start with the basics.

 

It will handle better with the correct size tire for the wheel.. that 170/60 is designed for something like a 5" wide wheel, not the 3.5" wide stock one. Fitting a tire that's too wide for the wheel changes the profile & contact patch, and not in a good way. The 150/70 is pretty much the limit for a 3.5" wide wheel before you go beyond the recommended rim size from the tire manufacturer.

 

Alright I will replace it with a 150 then. Thanks, I was wanting to make sure i was making the right choice for rear tire size. As far as the stalling, yes it had a full tank. I want to say the oil light came on before it stalled the first time but it may have kicked on right after stalling. I checked oil when i got home and it was low so i topped it off.

 

Alright I've been messing with the bike a bit today since i finally got my endorsement on my license. Before I rode yesterday i found a vacuum leak and fixed it. Previously I had a very high ide (1500rpm give or take). Now it seems im idling to low , I think this caused the stall. How do i adjust the idle on this bike? My previous bike had a big **** i could turn in the center of the carbs.... not sure about this one. Its idling about 650..
