Default New Engine...well, almost

So me and my dad were facing a rebuild. He thought it would set us back about $400-500 to rebuild this engine, and there happened to be an 89 on ebay right now for $400 with 18,000 on it. So we bought it. One thing I do know, is the 87-88 had like 70hp, and the 89-90 had 80hp.

Any advice anyone could give on this project. So far it looks pretty straight forward.

i wouldn't worry too much about the swap itself. i would concentrate on the engine. i'd give it a good once over on the clutch, valvetrain, make sure it has good compression, pull the oil pan to look at the bottom end, seals, etc. all the externals should go back in without much issue. did you get a updated wiring harness as well?

no wire harness, but he did throw in the set of carbs that came off of it. was there any differences in the wiring harness?

I am not sure if he dismantles working bikes, but he said it was in the bike running as of 8/24. and he defintely parts several other bikes out as well. said it makes no noises or anything, so lets hope he is right.

on the plus side you won't have to worry about california smog emissions items.

the wiring harness from the first 2 years is slightly different from the last 2 years. nothing really engine related as far as i can remember but mostly external support items. nothing to worry about. only major electrical item on engine is starter motor. everything else is just a sensor.

Was that motor the one listed asa cart motor? I was just looking at a hurricane 600 engine on ebay for my shifter cart.

Sorry i missed the link you already posted, That is the same engine I was looking at, what are the odds. I talked to the seller a lot about it and It sounded like a good motor, and a good price to go with it.

Got the engine swap done this afternoon. We had everything off the engine except the chain when we started today and after 5 hours we dropped the old block, adjusted the valves on the new one, put it in, and now have it running. The bike is still running rich since we are using my old carbs and need to adjust them, but no pinging and once it warmed up she purrs. Few odds and ends and I'm back on the road!
