Hi Shane, hate to say it but you've got to be looking at a donor bike, by the time you amass the separate parts and total cost, you could have bought another, but look at it this way ,plenty of spare parts

That's how I have done it along with watching EBay for deals. I now have 5 F1's and enough parts for 3 complete bikes. The original plastics are just not out there and are very expensive. There are fiberglass reproductions but they are not as good as the originals and very expensive also.

Been there. Find a complete bike on CL. I bought three kits or so to complete mine and have to sell off all the extras. Or buy new aftermarket for the same price

Ditto. I have an 89 complete and that is the keeper. I bought an 88 without any fairings for some parts, but then haven't needed it so am selling it but still without fairings. There are far more perfectly good bikes without fairings than there are fairings. You might look at Dennis' thread on his RR conversion because you can use newer and more readily available parts to build a nice bike. Not my thing so I'm just getting rid of the '88 but looks doable if that is the direction you end up going.

So do I understand that you are selling the fairing kit or looking to buy a fairing kit? Does the bike run? You are probably better off selling the bike whole although I could be wrong. I have a parts bike that I am getting rid of bit by bit, and it is a long slow process and most of it will probably go to the metal recyclers.

How can you owe $1000 in registration fees? My state only charges about $70 to register a bike for a year and if it isn't on the road you don't pay? I do remember that California had this thing where if you were going to take it off the road you had to tell them, otherwise the fees kept stacking up even though the vehicle was sitting in a barn somewhere. I never thought that was particularly fair, but still, I'd think there'd be a limit to the number of years you could be charged for.

(And then I look up and see you are in California. LOL. Check with the DMV and see if there is a max number of years or a waiver you can get if it has been sitting for a long time and you didn't know you should notify them. I think there might be.)

yep good ol' CA

let the registration pass without telling them. the registration is about $100 a year, but the fees they add are ridiculous. its only been off the road for 3 years.

i'm just at the point where by the time I pay registration, fix the flat rear tire, battery, and all the other gremlins of having a bike sit. i'm still left with a bike that's on the way out. (motor compression wasn't stunning)

I just maybe want to part out some good bits I have, then cut my losses and scrap it

yeah possibly looking to sell fairing. I have an old Fox TC rear shock too

Sell it complete to a family member out of state and they won't have to pay any Commifornia fees. Have it registered and insured in the new state. Have them resell it back to you 6 months later. Done, you bypassed the fees.

Great information! I'll keep that info in mind in the future, but like I said in the previous post. The bike is on the way out. I DD it for 2 years before I even had a car, but it was always a handful of problems. My last compression test was quite low, but I don't have any concrete numbers on hand.
